I really liked the first part, but then it got weird with all the different perspectives and time periods or whatever. I liked it when it was just a guy and his friends screwing around in Mexico City

One of the most enjoyable reads I’ve ever had.

>> No.18646726

I found it insufferable.
At the second part I figure it is just self-indulgent semi autobiographical masturbation about a poet and his poet friends. I forced myself through but I hated the rest of the book.
The adolescent story at the beginning was at least neat.
Do you have to be Mexican to enjoy it?

It seems like a lot of people don’t realize that it’s tongue in cheek. A lot of Bolano characters are being made fun of in a dry and subtle way. I’ve always felt that Bolano made fun of the type of person he was. He sees self aware

>> No.18646766

>>18646735
It is quite obvious that it is tongue-in-cheek. All the characters in it are pathetic and are meant to be teenagers who think they know the world. But that does not make the book any more interesting to read.
I could not care less about a homage to Bolano's recently deceased friend and his travels around Europe.

Even Belano and Lima know what they're doing is futile and utterly useless, they create the visceral realists in order to chase after a dream that can't really be realised and attempt to make sense of the world along the way via poetry

It's one of the most special and unique books I've ever read, top 5. I liked it even more than 2666, which I liked a fuckton.

I enjoyed the first part, but it changes and shifts into a sort of episodic mode with dozens of different narrators in different times and places. It's heartbreakingly beautiful and I hope my shilling encourages someone to read it.

>Do you have to be Mexican to enjoy it?
Not really, afaik. It just makes parts of the setting clearer.
>At the second part I figure it is just self-indulgent semi autobiographical masturbation about a poet and his poet friends.
A lot of the POVs are annoying, but it's less self indulgent than you think. Bolaño was poking fun at his friends and himself.
>The adolescent story at the beginning was at least neat.
I agree. I supposse it's a bit of a bait and switch, tonally, and I understand. But I would have been happy with more of it.
