That figures. Youtubers are expected to release videos on a fixed schedule, usually weekly, and that's not enough time to read a book thoroughly enough to have anything meaningful to say about it and make a yt video about it. They have to pad out their schedule with filler videos, and there's finite number of vaguely literature-related topics out there.

All our cringe, all our ambition, all our pretentiousness, all our fear that we aren't actually good enough to make it, all condensed into a single human form and brought to life.
So that's why we both love and hate him.

I hope I can get in contact with them and they can help me out.

Here's a list of the things I want to go over in the Learned Disguise review
> overview of Dark Academia
> plot summary of Learned Disguise
> inspiration for LD, on the official material, it says it's inspired by Faust, but both from a literary standpoint and from the now deleted LD announcement video, it's inspired by Sorrows of Young Werther
> go over the common criticisms of LD, just to get them out of the way
> characters of LD and how they're stand-ins for the people in Robin's life

Arthur is Robin Wu, but white, he plays the same Mozart pieces as Robin, gets pushback for leaving stem for the humanities, like Robin did from his father (RC talks about his father's disappointment in a Let's Play with another Youtuber), speaks Chinese like Robin alleged does, likes all the same authors that Robin does, wants to be a writer just like Robin does

Mr. Morton, generic old lit teacher

Felix, stand-in for Robin's high school friend who supported him through the writing of the novel, RC talks about him during the Learned Disguise announcement video and the Let's Play

Gretel, ??? I guess the novel needed a girl

Veda, stand-in for his crush, possibly Indian?

Timur, I find this character the most fascinating. This is the only character who ISN'T a stand-in from someone in Robin Wu's real life, I believe anyway. Timur, or Tim as he goes by, is the servant to the group, always calls everyone Sir, very submissive and takes on the opinions of everyone, he's so poor that he can only afford one book, is so thankful to Arthur for opening his eyes to the literature that Arthur likes. At the end of the book, Arthur has finished his novel, and has allowed his protege Tim to use his beloved typewriter so Tim can create his own literature. Now Learned Disguise was written in 2019, and at the time, this was not interesting in of itself. But then ... comes 2021, and Robin meets Jay

What is Jay's relationship with Robin?
> on social media, Jay constant talks about how amazing and smart and literary Robin is
> Jay is poor
> Robin is possibly financially supporting Jay so Jay can create the great literature that he is capable of
> Jay takes on the same literary opinions as Robin
> Robin allows Jay to use his beloved typewriter

So Jay is Timur 2.0

pic is the ending of Learned Disguise, where Arthur talks about his future relationship with Tim

This board is filled mostly with people in the age bracket of ~20 years of age, which are known as zoomers.
Zoomers have a need to deify e-celebrities, and are at an age of sexual discovery in their lives. First they went through a cycle of deifying e-girls, now e-boys. The next one will be an e-transgirl, or maybe they already found one.

In either case, just observe this as an oddity and move along. Nothing to waste your time over.

I think Cooper knows/knew RC in real life because he said that they met when he was talking to a friend about a book on Melbourne University's campus, RC overheard him, and pointed to him and said, "You! You have IT!" and made Cooper his muse, confidant, and protege. RC gave him an expensive camera to start his photographing career. When they hung out, Cooper said that RC would often talk with him to get ideas for writing and ask him to reassure him that he was a good writer and he was doing the right thing

I don't hate him. I think he's a meme because he lacks self-awareness and has never given a unique take on anything. He's like the human equivalent of a "Live, Laugh, Love" sign. He has had an incredibly easy life and his motivation/optimism hasn't been tested by reality as most people experience it. That sounds pretentious, but I mean it in the sense that he has always had so many materialist things going for him and yet still LARPs about having empathy with "the human experience." His vanity and the pretense of him spouting canned wisdom makes you want to show him what getting punched in the face and then kicked when you're on the ground feels like.

The main character of Learned Disguise, like RC Waldun himself, is interested in the idea of being a polymath or a Renaissance man, like Da Vinci. A lot of the things that LD's Arthur talks about are also the subjects of youtube videos that RC made

There are 2 things that I am genuinely curious about, maybe some of you can help me out.

The first is the term "proses". I've never seen the plural form of prose used in the stuff I've read, and I want to know where he learned to use that term. This isn't a typo like Van Gough or Mary Shelly because he uses proses throughout the book

I really think he's mimicking authors he's read. For example, he uses the term "afoot" a lot in his novel, but not the way Sherlock uses it. He wrote "dinner will be afoot in 20 minutes." They don't teach afoot in esl classes, so what happened here is that he read Arthur Conan Doyle or watched some Sherlock parody videos and decided that he needed to say afoot to sound literary
