Somewhere in Melbourne, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, lives a trust-fund kiddie. One of those who has a typewriter and YouTube Play button gathering dust on a shelf. An occasional coffee brewed only from the finest French roasts, rice more often than bread, stir fry on most nights, eggs and abstinence on Saturdays, and sometimes Shark Fin soup as a treat on Sundays-these consumed one-tenth of his allowance. The rest went to used books from musky second-hand bookstores, the finest stationary from Muji, and seldom leafed through hardcover copies of classic literature.

Our young gentlemen is approximately 20 years old, his complexion is soft and delicate, his face round, and is a very early riser and a great lover of aesthetics. Some claim that his family name is Woo or Wa, for in attempts to conceal his identity from the prying (and often sinister) curiosity of the web, his screen name has changed several times in the past couple years, although reliable conjecture seems to indicate that his name is Wu.

And so, let it be said that this aforementioned gentleman spent his times of leisure-which meant most of the year-collecting the finest clothes of vintage prep-school fashion and posing with suitable books in hand (the titles always in prominent display for the camera!) for Instagram and YouTube. Falling into such enthusiasm for the “dark academic” aesthetic and it's projected image of learnedness, he began to peek into some of the books he formerly only adorned. So inspired was he by the prose and daring nature of the beatniks that he forgot almost completely about his formal studies or the management of his allotted funds. In his rash curiosity and folly he went so far as to quit his part time job and pursue a career as a writer.

A fan of the Jazz Age writers featured in Midnight in Paris as well as other celebrated literary figures of the 20th Century, he thought none were as fine as Jack Kerouac. Because the clarity of his prose and complexity of his thought seemed to him more valuable than pearls. In particular when he read the declarations of rebellion: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars.” And also: “Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”

With these words and phrases our poor little chink lost his mind.

The really frustrating thing about Waldun is that he serves as a reminder of an unfortunate truth: pretenders often prevail.

People with integrity tend to handicap themselves with honesty and humility. People like Waldun will simply imitate the appearance of humility, essentially generating supernormal stimuli designed to trigger a response from an audience. A bit like Ocasio-Cortez's famous statement "I don't have enough information to form an opinion on this topic." A quick google search will demonstrate that Ms. Cortez frequently and boldly speaks out on topics of which she is completely ignorant, and the shit-eating grin with which she made this statement of humility makes it plainly clear that she has been waiting for the perfect moment to drop that line on national television.

Even more frustrating is that pretenders often don't know they're pretending, and so they assume everyone else is pretending as well. I'm going to guess that Waldun very much believes the common opinion you hear from people between the ages of 18-24: Adults don't actually know anything! They're just making it up as they go along! When in reality there are very clear-cut steps you must take to meet almost any "adult" goal you can think of: home ownership, career advancement, vehicle maintenance, child-rearing, that sort of thing. The reason people say this is because they lack genuine humility and empathy, and naturally assume everyone is as ignorant as they are, and therefore they never bother to seek out guidance from more experienced people. After about a decade of receiving advice and ignoring it and seeing the disastrous consequences of your own stupidity, you begin to understand that you don't know everything.

Waldun has a dangerous mix of ignorance and intelligence: ignorant of what makes good literature, but intelligent enough to mime the posture of a literary genius. He claims to have been taken down a peg by our criticism and to have spent time really thinking over his abilities and trying to write better, but in reality all he has actually done is refined his intellectual posturing. Whereas he previously believed that a literary genius must be "well-spoken, well-dressed, and surrounded by books," he now believes a literary genius must be "all of the above+open to criticism." Very soon he will enter a stage where he pretends to be unpretentious, appearing on youtube in plain t-shirts and drinking his wine from a tumbler, and writing books about something other than writing. And his audience will assume that these aesthetic changes reflect some kind of genuine inner shift in his outlook on life and literature, but it is in reality just a more sophisticated form of pretense.
