How do you cope with the fact that the ancient Hellenics and Argives were superior to you mentally, physically, spiritually, aesthetically, and every other way possible? Us in the modern world are all pretty much genetic refuse compared to them. Our entire world is absolute shit and bile and we will never even properly comprehend their greatness. We're like the most retarded pygmy nigger straight out of the congo jungle compared with the most brilliant aryan pure bred swedish nobel winning scientist x 1000.

And yet I would've guessed that you're simply delusional because of your upper middle class isolation (though I'd hate to imply that isolation was a result of your station rather than your repellant personality.) Sincere congratulations on avoiding those pitfalls.

Ancient Greece would probably pretty much resemble a third world country by modern Western standards. For all its great thinking, art and literature, there was slavery and serfdom, high infant mortality, long eradicated diseases like leprosy, plagues, much of the population, especially the rural peasantry, would have lived in quite deprived conditions and had few rights compared to the aristocracy, wars which frequently devastated the country, etc.

Yeah no shit we can't compare with idealised deities and myths. Hellenes probably felt the same awe looking back at Argives because Argives only exist as a Homeric ideal. Don't get me wrong, I totally think Ancient Greeks were superior to any culture that followed, but the distance is not that large. We definitely have moderns superior to Hesiod or Xenophon let alone to the average ancient Greek. Comparable to Homer, Plato, Thucydides, Aristotle? No. The average modern compared to the average Greek? A joke.

Those who question the exceptionalism of ancient Greeks, take into account the circumstances in which they were laying down the still standing philosophical and artistic foundations. Take into account the tools and resources they had at their disposal. Things weren't perfect, of course, but they were creating things which reverberate and influence to this day.

Now, if we consider the resources and tools we have at our disposal today, which we have because of the achievements of ancient Greeks in no small way, do the products of our culture appear worthy or justified? I don't think so. Will they be viewed as visionary in a couple of decades? It remains to be seen whether civilization will hold on for a couple of more decades due to the "achievements" of our culture and character of today's people

THE ANCIENT HEROES AND THE BOMBER PILOT

With nothing to brag about but the size of their hearts,
Tearing boar-flesh and swilling ale,
A fermenting of huge-chested braggarts

Got nowhere by sitting still
To hear some timorous poet enlarge heroisms,
To suffer their veins stifle and swell —

Soon, far easier, imagination all flames,
In the white orbit of a sword,
Their chariot-wheels tumbling the necks of screams,

In a glory of hair and beard,
They thinned down their fat fulsome blood in war,
Replenishing both bed and board,

Making their own good news, restuffing their dear
Fame with fresh sacks-full of heads,
Roaring, burdened, back over the wet moor.

When archaeologists dig their remainder out —
Bits of bone, rust —
The grandeur of their wars humbles my thought.

Even though I can boast
The enemy capital will jump to a fume
At a turn of my wrist

And the huge earth be shaken in its frame —
I am pale.
When I imagine one of those warriors in the room

And hear his heart-beat burl
The centuries are a stopped clock; my heart
Is cold and small.

— Ted Hughes

I’ve read 19th and early 20th century literature so I don’t need to go all the way back to the Greeks to find someone superior to us. It’s all been downhill since the world wars and anyone who’s been paying attention can see that clearly.

Looking backwards is a part of all types of fascism. It's a key part of the decadence of any concentration of power and a symptom of stagnation.

Next time someone talks about degeneracy, remember, you're it.

Our tendency to look backwards allow ancestor worship to turn to myths, and direction to turn to nostalgia.

What's sad is the way 20-somethings all talk like the bitter old farts of yesteryear and think it makes them sound classy, or insightful or strong.

Nope, they're anxious, ignorant conspiracy theorists idly looking through the treasures of the past instead of looking for any around them or in the future.

Sure. Its a necessary component of self realization. Most of any education involves to varying degrees conditioning the ego to accept its station in life. The proles are told they are slow and bombarded with numbers and letters, C, D, 60%, 74%, etc. to scientifically affirm their status as Helots until they can accept it. Rich kids at private academies, they are put through various dehumanizing rituals to alienate them from their inherent sense of pathos while affirming an innate entitlement, catered dinners, fancy stone facades on their school buildings, a constant re-affirmation in primary school highschool, and university that they are among "the best and the brightest". All a ridiculous carnival which exists for no other reason than to convince people to be what they are, and to be incapable of conceiving otherwise.

My hippy trippy parents didn't put me through this, they let me stay home and read and walk in the woods near my family estate. My teachers were Socrates and Plato, Tocqueville and Marx, and as a result I was able to stand outside it all and see how people were taught and conditioned to love and accept their station in life. I grew up around livestock so I could see easily how a calf resembles its mother, or how a kitten which is raised indoors will inevitably end up quite stupid and frail when compared to a cat which can hunt and follow its natural instincts. Now I didn't want to be an indoor cat, nor did I want to resemble my parents, so I took my life in my own hands and have cultivated the necessary levels of narcissism and self-importance to do so. Would my life be different if I had been better socialized, or had a more 'agreeable' personality like >>18747985 implied? Probably. Aristotle said that most people are naturally servile, only able to achieve happiness as tools to someone else's end. When you're as free as I am loneliness is the natural result, but thats a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
