What is always missing from this kind of thing is compliance. When people are fully immersed in the stream of conformity they just don't see this problem at all. Yes you can become better at writing but in the end what is selling isn't selling because of delightful prose, it's selling because it's urban fantasy for teenagers or pandering to some other massive demographic of buyers. The compliant normie-friendly writer will always see "become a better writer" inside the context of urban teenage fantasy. And so on for everything. It does matter what you do but there's this prerequisite that normal people simply glaze over: you have to be "in" the stream and fully, wholeheartedly participate to it. Thankfully I've had enough of a romantic life to get sick of it but the pattern I've always seen with "girls guys" was always that they were total, complete normalfags. There was nothing that stood out from the framework of what is hip/trendy in their context. They were always the most average people who fit the easiest in the social and fashion standards, who watched the average TV, who had the typical language, not more not less. Women were completely crazy about these guys who weren't even particularly good looking or charming. They were just the all defaults in a character creator. I've never seen the exceptional individual that self-improvement gives you the idea that you have to be. In the end as someone else said you do self-improvement for yourself but how you succeed in society has nothing to do with yourself, it's entirely to do with compliance with the most comfortable model of man as represented by society (ads and shit).
