How do you earn a living as an author?
It must be doable. Does anybody here make their living off creative work (doesn't count if you're subsidized by NEETbux)?
Let's brainstorm ideas. I bet if we put our heads together we could come up with something.
>Selling erotica online
>Science Fiction storywriting contests
>Freelance translation work
>Ghost-writing
Any other suggestions? I can't take the wagecuck life any longer.

Some people make money selling audio books online. If you can affect a patrician accent you can pick up old public domain works, read them aloud, and sell them for 3$ a piece on Amazon.

You don't. It's impossible.

Unless you are a master social climber and you have 0 issues writing something that's cobbled up from market research statistics, you literally have better chances at making a living in the arts selling shit to wannabes, or doing services to them. You can learn to program and make writing software, or learn to repair electric typewriters or fountain pens (yes this is unironically more realistic). You have to sell something that must be consoomed at cost and the media itself is not it.

Erotic lit as an industry sells three times as much as the next biggest genre, mystery novels. Its a simple way to make money consistently, and its actually a possible route to earn a living in a way that "being a literary author" isn't.

>>18785260
Jeez man I'm a self published author and I make more than that. Anyways, lets say you write six books. Now you're making twenty or thirty dollars a month. If you write sixty books, you're actually making enough to quite your day job and take a part time gig at a coffee shop or something. Maybe you start a youtube channel, sell merchandise, there are lots of possibilities. I don't think anyone expects to get rich off one book. But look, between my savings and welfare I could go maybe a year without working a steady job. Lets say I write, translate, etc. full time during this period, treat it as my job, what I'd like to do is get to the point I'm at now (making almost nothing from literature) to the point where I don't have to go back and get a job at the end of this all.

What's your point? Trad publishing is just boomer prestige awards from a decrepit dinosaur industry that won't exist in 20 years. If you're driven, have an internet connection, and can think creatively you can outdo this on your own terms. Same applies to >>18785391, if you're such an artist then think outside the box a bit. The whole point of becoming an artist is so you don't have to rely on a steady corporate paycheck, not so you can get a job being a corporate whore for Penguin Random House.

>> No.18785425

I earn a decent living as an author.
my first year after quitting my last day job I might have made $5K at best. but I knew that going in
If you want to make a living as a writer, write something decent and sell it.
self-publish an ebook and tell everyone to buy it.
print copies and sell it on street corners
talk to bookstores and do signings
or don't. send the outline to agents and ask them to read your manuscript (if they say no, it's only because it sucks. they're mad for new clients)
whether it works or not, write another book and do the same
open a patreon if you want, read your own book on youtube, record it and upload it to audible.
there's a thousand things you can do if you want to do them.
or not. you don't have to do any of things.
if the drive is there though, just start doing it. don't ask for permission or opinions from anyone.

>> No.18785629

>>18785103
You don't, fuck off and get a real job.
Not only that, but being a "professional" writer will significantly reduce the quality of your works, because it will prioritize quantity over than quality. Basically, you want to become Stephen King?

Stop giving it space inside your head.
Start your own publishing company.
Publish the books you want.
If they don't exist, publish them.
Translate what you want.
Have you looked into what Penguin Random House looks like these days? Cat ladies and MFA trannies everywhere, supplementing their minimum wage income with daddy's money in order to afford the New York lifestyle.
Be your own man and stop giving so much headspace to what some big company does. You could get more comments, hearts, and retweets in an afternoon if you really grinded at it. That's what matters, your actual audience. Prestige is the refuge of the unpopular.

So the sjw shit ends with the pen name? I can just call myself Ungala LeGungali and say I'm trans and I can write my own shit? Do you really think that? You might be right that it's all white people in disguise doing this shit, but they're writing what? people seem to insist that you can get published, I am sure you can, but writing what? they say "this guy is a winner, he made it", writing what? You go check and it's smut or YA shit for teenagers or SJW shit. This weird confirmation bias completely ignores what kind of shit people are doing to "make it" in whatever field.

Basically all publishers are trust fund kiddies getting handouts from the state in exchange for producing the right political content.
