What's the consensus on the Vulgata? Is it just Protestants that say it's a bad translation? Is the KJV actually valid to any other denomination? I really love the English it's written in.

>> No.18828925

>>18828859
The originals are ok separately but He willed the Vulgate as a way to join the wisdom of the Old with the passion of the New Testament in one corpus with a beginning and end.
>>18828886
The Vulgate is very beautiful, it was the staple of the West until protestantism sadly happened and was also written by a great saint. KJV is very good for English speakers, better than NIV in all fields.

>> No.18828937

>>18828886
Jerome's Vulgate is usually considered beautiful but it is a bit idiosyncratic for Latin, possibly by intent. For example I think Jerome avoids the infinitive for indirect speech/thought that classical Latin usually uses, so he does something like
>And God saw (that) it was good.
instead of
>And God saw it to be good.
which would be preferred by classical Latin writers.

The KJV is the most beautiful thing ever so I just wouldn't listen to anyone who tells you not to read it.

I had a Greek interlinear so I could read difficult passages in Greek. You can learn enough Greek to analyse the New Testament pretty easily. There are also books like Basics of Biblical Greek that are designed for anybody to be able to learn the basics. Honestly with a few days of cramming you could probably read 50-80% of NT (Koine) Greek with a good interlinear and understand the grammar and so on, since most of it is grammatically simple. A lot of third person singular present active indicatives, simple statements, with plenty of recurring vocabulary. Lots of people "learn Koine" by learning the New Testament. Although if you are super serious about learning Greek as a whole, you should technically learn Attic first, but you could go from Koine to Attic.

Hebrew is a whole other animal. Anyone have thoughts on learning biblical Hebrew the way that some Muslims learn just classical Arabic for the Quran?

Books on how to acquire the long-dead art of interpreting reality as a praeternatural whole? Of recovering the synthesis between the innocence of a child and the grimdark of an aged medieval peasant? I'm unfortunately too brainwashed to escape Cartesian Dualism and my scientistic programming. I'm not sure I can possibly live out Catholicism without being some potato-sacked-schizo compassing the streets performing spiritual and corporal works of mercy whilst sputtering some taxonomy of Being which connects all the branches of science, primitive myth, shamanism--all while dodging chaos-demons while riding a very fine line adjacent to the chasm of Idolatry.

I fucking hate trad caths so much. After living through nu-atheism, I thought there was no way any group could be more cringe. Now this board is infested with teenagers LARPing as gods messenger. I grew up Cathiloc and still have a lot of respect for it, but trad caths do not seem to possess basic knowledge of the faith. They do not believe a book written 2000-3500 years ago should have any critical analysis whatsoever. It blows my mind that some people saw nu atheism and thought "how do I make my side look even dumber than them?"

Lol @ anons telling you to read KJV for traditional Catholicism. KJV is a protestant translation based on Masoretic texts which Catholics do not and have never recognized. The ONE and ONLY Catholic Bible in English &from the Latin Vulgate is the DOUAY-RHEIMS BIBLE, which the KJV was also based on. The Knox Bible was made in the 20th century as a supplement to the DOUAY-RHEIMS.

I have the feeling there's a whole internet environment ready to snatch this kind of guy, I noticed a specific flavor of "youtube preachers" and I decided to do away with the internet side of this entirely.
Sadly religion is also the realm of predators and I'm concerned about that.
Honestly I'm not sure if I've been memed myself and I'm just blindly following an impulse but at least I disliked these people right away so I must have retained a shred of judgment.
