People used to write critiques of this kind of behaviour a century ago, the foppery that isn't even real decadence anymore but just routinised foppery, but zoomers are like that phenomenon dialed up to 4000%. It's so oversaturating it obliterates everything around it and can't be approached to be critiqued. This coolie zoomer has all the manicured effeminacy of 500 gay Belle Epoque dandies but none of the earthy "this is of a certain cultural moment" context to go with it. Even Der Untertan style schmisse-mongering late Wilhelmine faggots had a certain weight to them, there is still something to be SAID about why they mongered their schmisse.

Zoomer shit is like a 75 IQ cargo cult version of all those fin de siecle kitsch decadence behaviors, all the worst aspects with none of the good ones, thrown in a blender and turned into a brown slurry. Usually there is some kind of hierarchy to it, with some actual visionary trendsetters at the top even if they are degenerates, and then kitschy late to the party cane twirling faggots at the bottom, but look at something like "dark academia." Its trendsetting elite are teenage girls who don't even know what continent they're on, they just know that tweed is a kind of fabric. That's beyond retarded, that's full blown cargo cult tier, that's bone in nose tier ooga booga tribesmen wearing tattered suits and tophats because they think that's how the gods used to dress when they still visited the world.

WHY I WANT TO FUCK WALDUN

WALDUN AND THE CONCEPTUAL BICYCLE DISASTER. Numerous studies have been conducted upon patients in terminal paresis (GPI), placing Waldun in a series of simulated bicycle crashes, e.g. pileups, head-on collisions, condo attacks (fantasies of pedestrian and elaborate assassinations remained a continuing preoccupation, subject showing a marked polymorphic fixation on handlebars and rear basket assemblies). Powerful erotic fantasies of an anal-sadistic surrounded the image of the literary contender.

Subjects were required to construct the optimum bicycle disaster victim by placing a replica of Waldun’s head on the unretouched photographs of crash fatalities.

In 82% of cases massive rear-end collisions were selected with a preference for expressed fecal matter and rectal hemorrhages. Further tests were conducted to define the optimum model-year bicycle. These indicate that a three year model lapse with child victims provide the maximum audience excitation (confirmed by manufacturers’ studies of the optimum bicycle disaster). It is hoped to construct a rectal modulous of Waldun and the bicycle disaster of maximized audience arousal.

Motion picture studies of Waldun reveal characteristic patterns of facial tones and musculature associated with homoerotic behavior. The continuing tension of buccal sphincters and the recessive tongue role tally with earlier studies of facial rigidity (cf., James Joyce, Nabokov). Slow-motion cine films of YouTube lectures exercised a marked erotic effect upon an audience of spastic children. Even with mature adults the verbal material was found to have a minimal effect, as demonstrated by substitution of an edited tape giving diametrically opposed takes…

INCIDENCE OF ORGASMS IN FANTASIES OF SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH WALDUN. Patients were provided with assembly kit photographs of sexual partners during intercourse. In each case Waldun’s face was super imposed upon the original partner. Vaginal intercourse with “Waldun” proved uniformly disappointing, producing orgasm in 2% of subjects.

Axillary, buccal, navel, aural, and orbital modes produced proximal erections. The preferred mode of entry overwhelmingly proved to be the rectal. After a preliminary course in anatomy it was found that the caecum and transverse colon also provided excellent sites for excitation. In an extreme 12% of cases, the simulated anus of post-costolomy surgery generated spontaneous orgasm in 98% of penetrations. Multiple-track cine-films were constructed of “Waldun” in intercourse during (a) YouTube lectures, (b) rear-end bicycle collisions with one and three year model changes, (c) with rear basket assemblies…

SEXUAL FANTASIES IN CONNECTION WITH WALDUN. The genitalia of the perennial literary contender exercised a continuing fascination. A series of imaginary genitalia were constructed using (a) the mouth parts of Clark Elieson, (b) a Schwin, (c) the assembly kid prepuce of Jay the Author…In 89% of cases, the constructed genitalia generated a high incidence of self-induced orgasm. Tests indicate the masturbatory nature of the literary contender’s posture. Dolls consisting of plastic models of Waldun’s alternate genitalia were found to have a disturbing effect on deprived children.

WALDUN’S HAIRSTYLE. Studies were conducted on the marked fascination exercised by the literary contender’s hairstyle. 65% of male subjects made positive connections between the hairstyle and their own pubic hair. A series of optimum hairstyles were constructed.

THE CONCEPTUAL ROLE OF WALDUN. Fragments of Waldun’s cinetized postures were used in the construction of model psychodramas in which the Waldun-figure played the role of writer, critic, philosophy major, venerated professor, etc.

The failure of these roles to express any meaning reveals the nonfunctional character of Waldun. Waldun’s success therefore indicates society’s periodic need to re-conceptualize its social media leaders. Waldun thus appears as a series of posture concepts, basic equations which reformulate the roles of aggression and anality. Waldun’s personality. The profound anality of the literary contender may be expected to dominate social media in the coming years. By contrast the late Book Club remained the prototype of the oral subject, usually conceived in pre-pubertal terms. In further studies sadistic psychopaths were given the task of devising sex fantasies involving Waldun. Results confirm the probability of social media figures being perceived primarily in genital terms; the face of Jay the Author is clearly genital in significant appearance–the nasal prepuce, scrotal jaw, etc. Faces were seen as either circumcised (John Green, Clark Elieson) or uncircumcised (The Book Club, Better Than Food). In assembly-kit tests Waldun’s face was uniformly perceived as a soft penile erection. Patients were encouraged to devise the optimum sex-death of Waldun.

Waldun typifies something quite sad about modernity, which is the ability to educate oneself without discovery. Old fags remember how when it came to anime or books or board games you had a group of friends and some forums or magazines and you learned through passion and dedication. About five years ago I decided I wanted to get really into film, the first time I really dived into something new since Web 2.0 and fuck man. The internet offers so much information that I can talk about French new wave or Italian neo realism etc without ever having seen any of those films. I mentioned this phenomenon to a friend in regards to Waldun after he said Waldun could name drop with the rest of them. You can read what you want but frankly there is no reason why a 16 yr old should be reading Proust and the stuff he reads, and if they are then it should be under a tutor of some kind.

tl;dr nowadays people learn lists of shit should they should now without any organic discovery and understanding

As for paperbacks coming in early, my guess is that Waldun fucked up Amazon's pre-order feature and only picked the ebook option and forgot to choose it for the paperback

one of the reasons it seems like ESLery (which he is) is because of errors like that. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like he was trying to convey something "playing smart, are you?" instead. Like the linguist was trying to pull something sneaky—smoking indoors I would guess, just from the context.

Perhaps you're right, but let's stay on our toes. This is Waldun, we're talking about. He likes to subvert our expectations as shown mere sentences ago:
>The Man of History clapped as he made his way to the counter. Eddington stood silent.
>"You, there. Hey, put that thing away."
At this point, the reader is probably visualizing the man walking towards the counter and yelling. However, as we find out in the next sentence:
>The Man of History was at the counter, speaking to someone in a beige blazer.
Ha! Waldun plays with our expectations of space, time, and human interaction. Careful, for only the sharpest minds makes it out of L'Academie alive!

The prose is a genuine improvement over the other examples I've seen posted previously. None of those annoying attempts to be witty.

The issue is there's nothing here to make it seem dystopian. It's something you see in a lot of amateur dystopian fiction: they want to cultivate a disturbing society but they identify too strongly with their character so they can't make them suffer. So they give their protagonist a privileged position in their new society and the reader is always kept an arm's length away from the actual oppression, or they go with this route, and they create a "dystopia" in which one of their obsessions receives an unhealthy amount of fixation from the rest of society. And so, in the absence of physical deprivation or pain, it starts to look an awful lot like the author's ideal society, and it's one wherein the author themself ironically lands at the top.

Something tells me that this is going to be a lot like Divergent, except instead of being for mediocre girls who want mediocrity to be a societal ideal, it'll be for intellectual waders (self-proclaimed renaissance men multi-potentialites) who want intellectual specialization to be demonized. Something tells me Waldun will be projecting in this book, essentially proclaiming that people who simply memorize things to get high grades or good careers are somehow less intelligent than more "creative" people, except Waldun doesn't realize he does the former to make people think he's the latter.

This is certainly true, however, I believe that there's an additional component to this.
1. In past interviews, Waldun praises the """well-rounded intellectual"""" that are unlike the rote-memorization robotic non-creative intellectuals at his high school. However, he has a fixation on those well-rounded intellectual's girlfriends. When he says that they live life, he mainly means that they have romantic interests. I believe that what really drove Waldun to literature was a belief that if he became a dark academian, he would get a gf

2. I think he's using Jay as a surrogate girlfriend, or at least a surrogate apprentice. He tried to have a similar relationship with Cody but it didn't work out.

3. When Waldun talks about why he is studying English literature, and he doesn't talk about what exactly he likes about books. I've actually never heard him analyze a passage, he always just says something like, "that's so good" or "I really like the aesthetic." Instead, it seems like he believes that becoming a scholar of literature will transform who he is

> None of those annoying attempts to be witty.

There's a passage in Learned Disguise where Gretel chases a stray goose. At first, I thought this was ESL humor, because it's a literal wild goose chase, oh ho ho ho ho. But then I watched Waldun's historical humor video and I found out that he thought the act of chasing a goose down a street in a historical setting was itself funny.

>he would get a gf
Waldun wants to be a person who receives invitations to give lectures at prestigious universities, but he would most likely settle for magazine interviews. I'm guessing his ideal spouse is one that he rarely sees or talks to, because he's so ~*~passionate about his writing~*~ that he doesn't need human affection.

He's a pseud. Not difficult to understand. Intellectuals study reality or art and make interesting observations which reveal the deeper meanings of these works to the masses. Pseudointellectuals study intellectuals and make efforts to imitate them in the hopes of gaining respect (eg a gf). What sets Waldun apart is that he has the courage to do this in front of an audience, whereas most of us only do this to people we know IRL, after we've gauged their intelligence and education and we can be reasonably confident that they're not going to catch on to us.

Apart from that he is no different than any other literary pseud. He had a fixation on publishing a short story compilation, he tends to go on and on about how a famous story made him feel (as opposed to offering a personal interpretation of the symbolism or themes), and he dresses like a jackass from a hundred years ago. I doubt that he legitimately enjoys reading, I think he just lacks the discipline to study math or science or even psychology.

I'd like to elaborate on my first point for a moment, about the short story compilation. You see this fixation a lot on writing forums. Amateurs tend to really, really want to publish one right out the gate. Probably because they assume the short length means less work. It's basically the hallmark of someone who wants to have written as opposed to someone who wants to write. Because having gotten a book published indicates a certain level of intelligence and insight, and the less familiar you are with books, the more impressed you are inclined to be with the publishing industry. So people like Waldun have this notion that they can write a short story (something which they incorrectly perceive as simplistic, like Raymond Carver's Cathedral) about once a week and then publish it and people will be impressed. Only the really, really shamelessly bad authors actually attempt to do it though, people with self awareness tend to notice imperfections in their writing and attempt to fix them, leading to a genuine desire to produce quality fiction.

>> No.18862066

>>18861958
That short story point you made is pretty true, but I disagree with it a little. I think the short story is a good format for young writers to adopt when starting out-- but only if they're being written correctly. This is because the *correct* method of writing a short story involves obsessive editing and plotting. It may be 10 pages, but those 10 pages need to be incredibly high quality. The short story is a much more forgiving teacher than the novel is; if you want to fundamentally change the skeleton of a short story, it's a much less arduous undertaking to rewrite than it is for a novel.

Short stories are ridiculously hard to write, and I think they really serve as more of a filter for young writers than anything else. Depending on what you're able to learn from them, they can be a kind teacher or a cruel mistress.

>This is because the *correct* method of writing a short story involves obsessive editing and plotting.
Your fundamental point is correct, it absolutely is a mistake to think that a short story doesn't deserve the same level of focus and thought as a novel, and a beginner writer should take advantage of the short length to understand the purpose and process of editing. But I think you're mistaking my point. I'm talking more about motivation than actual production.

People who really, really want to write will start with short stories because it requires less time investment and it's more manageable. People who want to be seen as writers will start with short stories because they misunderstand the process, and probably aren't even aware that they can 'edit' something they've already written (obviously Waldun realizes this, he updates old blogs sometimes, but he probably thinks editing just consists of replacing mundane words with fancier ones). They think they can just devote one afternoon to a story and then forget about it, and then repeat the process until they've produced a novel's worth of material. Or they can kind of edit on a rotating schedule, gradually changing each story until they can think of nothing else to change. And then compile them and sell them, not realizing that the compilations they see from famous authors are the result of decades of magazine submissions and that each story was a unique project, not a part of an effort towards a larger goal.

It also explains Waldun's choice of subject matter. Going back to Raymond Carver's Cathedral, it would be easy to mistake it as nothing more than a description of an interesting evening in the author's life. It's set in a mundane home and there's no violence or real conflict. It's so accurate and dry that it never occurred to me the first few times that the author might have invented the entire evening. It's only later that it occurred to me that the author had something to say besides "wouldn't it be difficult to try to explain sight to a blind man?" So someone like Waldun sees a story like that and knows that it's considered high literature, and probably does legitimately enjoy the story when he reads it, but never gives it any deeper thought. Very few people would at his age, I certainly didn't. So he's convinced he need only transcribe events from daily life, with a few details changed to spice things up, in order to eventually stumble across "good fkn literature DAMN YOU" or whatever he said in that one screencap.

I do understand the he wants to be seen as a dark academia scholar (or social critic like in >>18852893, kek) and therefore will name drop books he has read whenever he can, but even if we take that into consideration he must be reading more than the average dude.
