Here are a couple of notes I took when listening to his latest video:
>Officially renounces The Learned Disguise
>Claims he "didn't know how to tell a good story". Implying that his storytelling skills are now stellar.
>Feels it necessary to provide a backstory as to why he read a book? (uses "I've" when talking in the past tense (a classic Waldunian technique))
>In his story, he drops someone off at the airport, then goes back to a bookstore in the suburbs to read Fahrenheit 451 (so why was it relevant to talk about dropping someone off at the airport?)
>He happens to finish Fahrenheit 451 at the exact same time as the bookstore closes
>Gets the idea for l'academie from seeing people wearing different coloured suits
>"Most of the sentences in this first draft "didn't flow at all". Just hearing Waldun talking about sentences flowing puts a smile on my face. the proses sir... they flow!
>The "group of editors" that Waldun hired wanted to line edit everything. There's no fucking way that this book as been line edited.
>He now has a "really clean manuscript". Really Waldun?
>His gf was kicked out of a cafe (this scenario has now happened twice in this video) because she was so engulfed in the story. LMAO
>His gf "is not just a random person", she's a "literature student and bookseller" - which is apparently good enough credentials to prove to Waldun that someone he is romantically involved with is going to give their objective, unbiased opinion which is far more valuable than a non-literature student / non-bookseller's opinion.
>The actual release of the book is the 1st September, but paperbacks can be bought from Amazon as a "special deal". This one just blows my mind. The idea that a paperback release is not the real release, but is actually a "special deal" is laughable. He's obviously just fucked up the publishing process on Amazon.
>My absolute favourite moment in the video is at 9:25 where Waldun utters the phrase "so in a sense in conclusion". What this means, I have no idea. Waldun's genius is far too complex for my understanding.
>Waldun then likens storytelling to "beating yourself with a whip". In l'academie, there's a scene where Waldun's self-insert is whipped. I'm not saying that Waldun has a BDSM fetish, but I'm not saying he doesn't either.
>The video sponsor is a website which condenses books into easy to understand notes. Literally what he's portraying as a dystopian nightmare in his little story, he is now advertising in the same video. Beyond satire.

I noticed that in a different video, Waldun uses the phrase "x was beaten into me with a stick" meaning that his father constantly admonished him for his fashion. Obviously that's just a phrase, but it does make me wonder if there is an underlying subtext to his words

I don't know how Waldun is fucking up his release this badly, to be honest. I should get abck in his DMs and ask him how it's going.

I sold 1000+ copes of my first, self-published novel, in three months just through shilling on 4chan / twitter / tumblr / reddit / tiktok. Then made enough to move to a much nicer city and based on my indie sales numbers, leveraged that into an actual publishing contract for Q1 2022.

Now I'm just chilling and working on other personal projects and loving it.

Also I just wrote this and am currently filming the short film version, what do you guys think?

I am making a few changes, but I don't expect much to change with the review. L'Academie was a surprise disappointment, and when I do talk about L'Academie, it'll be about how it pales in comparison to Waldun's first book, which in hindsight, was a masterpiece.

Later tonight I'm going to record the first ~20 minutes of audio for the review and then then tomorrow I'm going to use my library's wifi to upload it to youtube and post it here to see to get some feedback.

I am looking for some biographical information on Waldun. I am familiar with his self-promotion and errors. He says he is a student. What level? He says he is scientifically oriented, but he just released a novel. He dresses well. Does he have money? Some site says he's Australian, but he sounds more like a Canadian child of immigrants to me. Any noteworthy events in his life he has discussed or any notable errors he's made that you canremember?

I'm not arguing with his beliefs on dystopia, but I would find a note-taking software for books to be pretty cool. I wouldn't use it because I want to read the book, but it would be funny to call out pseuds for using it. With the rise of a single type of computer-generated summary, as opposed to human-made summaries that can differ substantially in style, it was be even easier to filter pseuds.

Well you're kind of fucked then. Self-publishing is for romance, YA adventure, erotica, military sf, wuxia, litrpg, in that order. Did you pitch to SF agents? Try toning down the sf element and pitch as literary or even thriller depending on the story. Literary is more accepting of experimental. You could also try breaking into the short story market to gain some cred, but I generally think that's a colossal waste of time. But it doesn't have to be a huge time waste. For example, maybe take a scene and see if you can adapt it to a short punchy story for Daily SF. Then if you get a story published somewhere you can say that in your cover letter to the next agent you pitch to. Then they will pay closer attention to your pitch.

>> No.18897350

>>18897336
Also, writing for yourself and what you genuinely want to read is a very different pursuit than writing with the aim of being published and having a lot of readers. You may end up writing to the market but in the least painful way possible, a compromise. Post excerpt?

From my experience looking at QueryTracker and twitter, I just can't imagine an agent being anything other than a parasite latching onto someone who already has offers or ticks all the diversity boxes anyway.
Based on what you've said I would say literary is where my piece falls then. But all the literary agents I've seen are boring stiff shirts up their own ass too.
As a matter of fact I have published many short stories, but I don't wish to share them here so email me

The LearnED Disguise. EDdington.

Goons. You fail to note the level of intertextuality at play within Waldun's growing corpus. In this age of social media--we see an evolving portrait of the artist as a young man. By unifying the autobiographical stylings of the Beat Generation and new media tools such as YouTube and Instagram--our man Waldun gives us a running commentary on art as life. Such is The Melbourne Manifesto!

LARPers. Ha. Their art imitates their lives because they live their lives artfully. Finding the magnificent in the banal. Wanting for the unwanted while wanting us to want them by bearing witness to their real want for connection.

You may call them pretentious. However, their pretensions are like that of a great presidential speech. The audacity of youthful idealism. The glory unfolding before themselves. Living for art, wanting for nothing, allowing all to bear witness. It's bravery, not naivete.

One of our man Waldun's latest pieces: https://rcwaldun.com/blog/we-are-not-a-couple

A woman at a cafe--the archetypal object of desire causes our man to become self-aware. But what is he aware of? That he should desire but doesn't desire--she moves him from a light drink to a heavy drink. A call to adventure that the feminine has forced upon him.

This excerpt is a brilliant example of the complexity of Waldun--as a writer AND a figure of the larger Melbourne movement. Notice the deep symbolism Waldun is using to code repressed homosexuality. The winking phallic language in "long black." The resonance of moving from tea to coffee as the symbolic object. The sweet repression of emotion Waldun gives us via a delicate use of irony, the archetypal structuring at an inverse. It is simply--simply masterful.

Decades from now, when dark academia has won the day—nay, the century, scholars will be mulling over the Jungian synchronicity of evoking the image of Jay. The shade of character—an email without formatting. Will Jay teach our Robin to soar above the constraints his repressed sexuality has imposed upon him? Understanding this, partaking of this journey, is our call to adventure my frens.

It's a meta device. He knows that you may know that the quote is false--it's a signal to us scholars. I see you're new to Waldun.

The educated reader is thrown deep into Waldun's web of intertextuality from the start. He's coding his sexual repression by alluding to Milton's Paradise Lost (only the most modern and attentive readers pick up on the implied homoeroticism of the God/Satan relationship).

Its really bad. I thought people were being too harsh at first, but after reading the first chapter I can see why its criticized so much. The grammer is clunky and awkward, while switching between present and past tense. Plus, every other sentance seems to be cluttered with constant ramblings in hopes of being considered descriptions.

Honestly, just what one would expect when reading a young adult self insert fanfiction.

I think for anyone else it would just be considered a bad book by the general public, but due to his online persona and smugness over "dark academia literature" it falls under much more scruntity.

It's not bad. Read the first paragraphs for yourself:

>A cold wind blew through The Regime, whirling rubbish along the ground. There weren't many people out, but someone would pick it up eventually. When the street light turned green Eddington crossed the road, walking straight and tall with a blank expression, but beneath the facade he felt anxious. Pausing for a moment, Eddington felt for his earpieces. They were still in place, but not working as well as they used to. Others walked past him straight, tall, and expressionless – all with the same earpieces.

>Eddington’s gray blazer didn't do much against the cold winds, but if he walked a little faster he felt fine. He was distracted by a rolling coffee cup on the sidewalk and wanted to pick it up. It would be nice to clear some rubbish from the street, but a warm cuppa java mattered more. Eddington could see the caffeine dispensary from where he was standing. He passed denizens of The Regime along the now crowded streets. Must be Swarm Time...

It's a reference to Jean-Pierre Melville's cinematography, where he also displayed made up quotes in the introductions of films such as Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge. Notice the nom de guerre Melville, through which Waldun points out the historical evolution of the artist. Herman with literature in the 19th century, Jean-Pierre with film in the 20th, Robin with both in the 21st. Through this apparent mistake, Waldun posits himself as a postmodern creator, pushed to a pluralistic and interdisciplinary approach to art.

Open question: Will Waldun become a better writer when he accepts his homosexuality or will the loss of subtext render his work less interesting?

>> No.18899046

Right I read the whole thing. Here are actual thoughts about the book, and not latent homosexuality or whatever.

The good enough:
Eddington's memories of interacting with Amelia. I wonder in Waldun really has read the Iliad to Ila Rose by a forest stream. Feels genuine, or at least something he deeply wishes to be true.
The whole premise of education giving a shallow knowledge. People often do compartmentalize what they learn, be well educated but then uncritically accept completely ridiculous things.
Tom's shift to an actual human being tied to Eddington actually acknowledging him as one, rather than just the Man of History, generic L'Academie automaton.

The obviously cribbed from other dystopia:
Big entertainment don't think for yourself screens as home
New Speech "I unlike the Prefects"
People stopped caring about books even before they were banned
Most just accept the regime, don't worry about prefects because they are true believers. Why of course I said down with Big Brother, they wouldn't arrest me if I were innocent.
Goes crazy, I love Big Brother ending

The terrible world building:
When he started to meet the rogues, the whole thing felt like it was supposed to be unrealistic. Just walk down an alley and you're suddenly out of sight of this all-seeing regime. Then it fell apart and they really were hiding out unseen within this walled surveillance state.
Why did this whole takeover happen? Archer justifies it at the end by state of world outside walled districts, but the regime started before that happened.
What exactly is the point of Archer and Ed being able to think freely? Ed seemingly had nothing to do with the others being caught.
Why was Tom able to read right away, while Ada took years and Ed's ability to read immediately was seen as bizarre?

right at the end archer refers to "the sickness" which will soon take him, as it took amelia. was it this disease/virus that tore the planet apart and made the piecemeal implementation of a fascist regime necessary?

did l'académie predict fucking covid-19?

>Ed seemingly had nothing to do with the others being caught.

Maybe he will be able to reach an audience wider than that of his fanbase (that include us in a twisted sense), and when the actual reviews of people willing to criticize him come up, is when he will either man up or double down on living through his delusions. By copying 1984, Fahrenheit 451 and other great works of literature, R. C. Waldun has managed to write a book that is almost unreadable, even for a meme. The prose doesn't flow, the world doesn't make sense, the characters are soulless stereotypes of stereotypes and you can clearly feel the places where the author self-inserts.

How can a literature student and avid book lover write something so bad. Not even mentioning the apparent 5 drafts and teams of editors...

While this may not be his true writing style, someone ought to have told him these basic things which degrade the book. Unless he has <70iq he should understand and be able to fix them.

The literary industry has been stagnating over a decade, what with all the constant women/minority writers being unfairly pushed ahead and no real counterforce to the mainstream resembling the 80s or 90s alt writers.

However naive and amateurish this 'movement' is, the fact remains it's the only thing to get excited about because there's a degree of real passion behind it and people resonate with that.
