never read Baudelaire. Judging from the era, region etc. it's going to be a book that is (overly) concerned with the internal state (think of feelings and thoughts) of man, usually with a penchant for a very detailed description of otherwise rather mundane things.

That's all lyric poetry

as said before. I don't have experience with Baudelaire although I've heard his name before. Apparently, les fleurs du mal is degenerated.

It mostly depends on your familiarity with the French language.
As a native speaker, I read Baudelaire in high school since he's part of the French canon.

Good things:

He killed Victor Hugo. With this small volume he completely ruined the tons of pompous verses written by Hugo and that's great.

His style in verse poetry is insanely good, yet completely classic. He didn't revolutionise poetry, that would be Rimbaud and Mallarmé. A mix of urban life and tortured Catholic faith? See François Villon from the 15th century. His book is a garden as were many in the Parnasse movement. He'd open the way to Huysmans as an anti-naturalist.

As a critic he had impeccable taste. Both on literature and art.

Bad things:

The man himself. He'd probably never befriend you. Also took money from everyone he met as he was riddled with debt and changed his address once or twice a week throughout all his adult life to escape his creditors.
Also a monarchist reactionary.

This is a good thing, you literal cuckold.

Anyhow, I have read a few of his poems in French. But I feel it is difficult when you are not deeply familiarized with the language to appreciate all the subtleties fully.
