Evola on Americanism

>This is obviously the case with the 'self-made man'; in a society which has lost all sense of tradition the notion of personal aggrandizement will extend into every aspect of human existence, reinforcing the egalitarian doctrine of pure democracy. If the basis of such ideas is accepted, then all natural diversity has to be abandoned. Each person can presume to possess the potential of everyone else and the terms 'superior' and 'inferior' lose their meaning; every notion of distance and respect loses meaning; all life-styles are open to all. To all organic conceptions of life Americans oppose a mechanistic conception. In a society which has 'started from scratch', everything has the characteristic of being fabricated. In American society appearances are masks not faces. At the same time, proponents of the American way of life are hostile to personality.

>The Americans' 'open-mindedness', which is sometimes cited in their favor, is the other side of their interior formlessness. The same goes for their 'individualism'. Individualism and personality are not the same: the one belongs to the formless world of quantity, the other to the world of quality and hierarchy. The Americans are the living refutation of the Cartesian axiom, "I think, therefore I am": Americans do not think, yet they are. The American 'mind', puerile and primitive, lacks characteristic form and is therefore open to every kind of standardization.

Jung on America
>"Another thing that struck me [in the American] was the great influence of the Negro, a psychological influence naturally, not due to the mixing of blood. The emotional way an American expresses himself, especially the way he laughs, can best be studied in the illustrated supplements of the American papers; the inimitable Teddy Roosevelt laugh is found in its primordial form in the American Negro. The peculiar walk with loose joints, or the swinging of the hips so frequently observed in Americans, also comes from the Negro. American music draws its main inspiration from the Negro, and so does the dance. The expression of religious feeling, the revival meetings, the Holy Rollers and other abnormalities are strongly influenced by the Negro, and the famous American naïveté, in its charming as well as its more unpleasant form, invites comparison with the childlikeness of the Negro.

>The vivacity of the average American, which shows itself not only at baseball games but quite particularly in his extraordinary love of talking – the ceaseless gabble of American papers is an eloquent example of this – is scarcely to be derived from his Germanic forefathers, but is far more like the chattering of a Negro village. The almost total lack of privacy and the all-devouring mass sociability remind one of primitive life in open huts, where there is complete identity with all members of the tribe.
>It seemed to me that American houses had their doors open all the time, just as there are no hedges round the gardens in American towns and villages. Everything seems to be street. It is naturally very difficult to decide how much of all this is due to symbiosis with the Negro, and how much to the fact that America is still a pioneering nation on virgin soil. But taken all in all, the wide influence of the Negro on the general character of the people is unmistakable."

He had a lot of hot takes on things he didn’t understand and thus one is particular strange considering his emphasis on aristocratic tastemakers and yet he seems to believe the collective mass or American spiritual proles have arrived at this on their own and believe it, even after the world wars. How many people from his own country went to America not because they wanted to or believed anything in particular, but because they had no choice after the unification robbed them of land and livelihood? This guy’s anti-bourgeois sentiment and anti-prole sentiment was his Achilles heel because it made him deluded.

>Be ye like unto little children
Can't say that I find this at all bad; unlike Europeans Americans aren't set up on a future determining educational or de-educating track at twelve, and are therefore able to feel their way into their professional futures, often with late dawning great passion, which is why they move forward with more relative speed than their bored, trapped European colleagues (in whatever given field). Not saying that there aren't many perils or many failures; hope just lasts somewhat longer here, and is totally reinforced and therefore encouraged and helped by American religion. Also why so many people want to come here- for that second, third, fourth, fifth chance. A relatively generous place in despite of Corporate greed. Would live nowhere else.

This isn’t even true. In no sense do Americans progress and at a quicker rate than Europeans in any arena whatsoever. That is the irony of America. It’s structured almost wholly around economic pursuits and it fails massively in that regard. It rode an asset bubble for decades and as soon as the bubble popped it turned out that Americans are worse than many European counterparts at the median and the mean across all ages. The one thing it aims for it doesn’t even achieve.

It doesn’t matter. It’s wrong on every front. What is true is that it’s possible more often in America, but it occurs less as a matter of fact.
