Was Joyce so based?

Joyce is overrated garbage that we have to pretend he is hot shit because everyone says so. He was the equivalent of a demented man writting ramblings about the crazy shit he thought before getting wasted and shooting heroin.

>> No.19104984

>>19104936
your partially correct. he was also a highly masterful prosaist and deeply erudite on an extremely large number of topics, and the connection between these and his crackhead ethos is what makes him truly special

He was the shallowest of all the significant modernist writers.

There are plenty of people who don't like Joyce, but the thing is, they can never quite articulate what it is that makes him so objectively bad without resorting to some vague implication that he isn't worth the effort, or some dated formalism. Thats your choice. Either you're filtered, or you have the literary sensibilities of someone who hasn't read past Dickens. I have yet to encounter exceptions. Even if you don't care about Ireland, even if you don't care about his experimentation, Joyce has produced some of the finest sounding prose in the English language. If you think you're the one to finally show me why I shouldn't like Joyce, feel free to give me your best reasons.

At least with organic, non-forced memes, like Tundra... the badness is at least mixed in with in jokes and postmodern garbling and cracks.

Now that this idiot's book has been uploaded and we can all read it, the joke is over, it's just blah garbage that isn't interesting, funny, or even at the very least coherently written. Sad!

Butterfly butterfly shit on my dick
Butterfly butterfly shit on it quick
Suck on my dick and i'll make you my whore,
But if you really start wanting some more
Then kidnap and rape me until i'm aware
That never I'll exit your underground lair.
If you allow me one chance at a kiss
I'll dedicate decades to drinking your piss.

Just finished up Dubliners. I think it's fine but I don't see why it's so praised on /lit/. I liked Counterparts, Grace, and A Painful Case quite a lot. I get that it's more "atmospheric" then plot driven but half of the stories were so boring and mondane. The worst one imo has to be Clay.

If JAAJ had only written Dubliners and Portrait, he wouldn't be remembered as a genius. 80% of his reputation as a master is based in Ulysses.

it's irrefutable.
the people who say it's "ramblings" or "incoherent" have not read him, at all.
Dubliners is extremely straightfoward, written in a "traditional" manner with exceptional quality. Almost the same thing can be said about Portrait, and even going into Ulysses, it's not at all that hard to comprehend, at least at a foundamental level.
