I want to read about post-structuralism, especially concerning media studies. Where should I start? With Baudrillard?

No, it's a picture of a pipe. A representation of reality. You cant smoke it.

I can and I WILL smoke the picture.

What you see with your eyes is always just a representation of reality, be it a pipe or a picture of a pipe. A physical pipe also isn't a pipe. Magritte is a pseud.

- picture of a pipe is a pipe, just not a literal pipe. So calling it not a pipe is inaccurate.

According to that line of thinking, what IS a pipe then?

Not the guy you're responding to, but the line of thinking is what Buddhist use and later on when phenomenologists field was created.

The idea is trying understand how we know what we know and whether or not what we know even make any sense.

I'll use one buddhist model of conceptualization. We have our eye, an object outside of our eye, and the mental model that we create in our minds. These are the standard model requirements. The eye is just a sensory organ in our body. The object outside of our eye is what is out there. The mental model is a mental object inside our mind, like a virtual reality. Try imagining a dinosaur in your mind. Thats a mental object. But you can do that to external things too. Look at the computer in front of you or the phone. We still create a mental object in our mind of that object outside.

So the thinking/line of reasoning is, the mental objects in our mind are never what is outside because what we conceptualize in abstract ways (like talking to others, dreaming about it, thinking about it, etc) are never what is out there. The straight forward reason is that you're dealing with only a mental image, but the bigger part is you're not only dealing with a mental object but you dont even know if that mental object is a perfect representation. For example, our emotional states can misrepresent an object. That way we look at/pay attention to an object can be flawed. It could also be an optical illusion of the external object itself as well. Or our eyes could be defect or not up for it. We know many species in this world have better eye sights than us and worse than us. Whats to say there is even a perfect eye sight at all?

So not only do we only see a mental representation of an object, we don't even know if thats an accurate mental model because of variety of things. Hence such, even if a physical pipe is infront of your very eyes, we can't see "the" physical pipe, but only a mental representation of it in our head.

Also to add a point to OP on what post structuralism is.

This idea that we can't trust what we assume to be even from experience of mental objects nor the structure based around these sets of experiential truths from which we built this society/world.

No, it's clearly a pipe, and we were fighting dragons in Skyrim. The sooner we drop the qualifiers the better. We're all moving to abstract spaces more quickly than we would even do on our own, it's just the next phase of the information age; it is the intuitive next step.
