Esmenet is a tool for his TTT. Killhouse comes from Ishuäl, meaning he isn't bound by the concept of cuckolding because its beyond him, it does not concern him. The fact that Esmenet is banging other dudes probably is part of his plan. The thing is you are seeing the issue from the eyes of a world-born man. From Killhouse's POV there is no issue, its not because he is a cuck but because he is above and beyond these types of questions.

The book write-ups posted to this thread will resume next week, probably. My current plan is to read the first book of arguably* the most popular and beloved /sffg/ fantasy series, which also has a dedicated cadre** of detractors.

I've been playing a game, which I finished yesterday. I greatly underestimated how much saudade*** I'd feel. It was an unique emotional experience. I hope eventually there will be more, but there are only so many powerful and meaningful experiences that one can effectively mine and refine from one's childhood. It wasn't so much the game as it was the recollections from that time in my life. I don't think there any relevant book series that has done similarly. I know one manga series that did something like it, but I wasn't happy with how that turned out.

*very much argumentation indeed, yet given the information available to me, it seems to be true.
**a few obstinate posters forcibly teaching their preferred memes
***or desiderium, but I like the former better.

> “It’s an overwhelming sight,” Ozriel said softly. “This is the central planet of the world we call Cradle. Iteration 110. It is larger than average for an inhabited planet, with vital aura making it both harder and easier for humanity to spread. At the moment of this recording, over six hundred billion souls call this place home.”

What the FUCK are we going to call phones in the future? Are there any recent novels that address this, what do they call them?

To most people, the phone part of a phone is of less importance than mobile computers. When are we going to start calling them something else to fit the changing role they have?

Everybody talks about Internet of Things and Smartwatches and AR Glasses, but none of these replace the immediate accessibility and easy use of a smartphone, so I don't think they'll go anywhere. I don't think we'll just call them tablets or something either.

I remember years ago I watched some anime where the protagonist had a sword named Terminus Est (it could also turn into a loli but that's irrelevant to this story). I remember typing it into google at the time and seeing it was also the name of a sword from some fantasy novel but I didn't commit the title to memory at the time. Some years later I came here looking for recommendations and unsurprisingly I ended up reading BotNS. So you can imagine my surprise when I discovered by complete coincidence, I had stumbled upon the same book from all those years ago that I heard about but never looked into. I always remembered that name Terminus Est because even though the anime wasn't very good I thought the sword name was extremely cool, so I remembered it instantly. And thankfully, the book turned out to be one of the greatest fantasy novels I've ever read. It's just funny how fate works out sometimes. So thank you, random Japanese guy, for having good taste in books, so that I could have this story to tell.

Cradle is physically enormous as planets go. Souls refers to sentient beings, but also remnants and spirits. There's billions of low grade remnants floating around, trapped in constructs, caves, trees, etc. There's repeated mention of a type of tree that leaves a Remnant for each individual leaf (which is the type of tree Emeriss Silentborn originally was).
But also I'm pretty sure that number was hyperbole. In fact, I think later editions of the book actually changed that line to something more reasonable, if still very large.

Yeah, the distances mentioned are huge. At one point Suriel travels 5x the circumference of Earth and it's not mentioned how far that is relative to The size of Cradle. My first thought would be how much more gravity that would be, but it's a fantasy novel and logic need not apply.

After all, there are chains described where each spoke is large as a star. It's not meant to make any sense, but to just be fun. Though that's probably also why it's ending in the book after the next.

It's not really impressive relative to how many there are. I think there's around 300 books. I haven't updated keeping track in a long time. I think almost anyone not deeply involved doesn't realize how they relate to each and misunderstand everything about it in general. I may say more later.

Started Book of the Long Sun a few weeks ago. It's finally starting to grow on me-at first I as like "idk wtf is going on" but I'm at chapter 5 and the story is starting to get enjoyable. It's different from New Sun but I'm glad I didn't give up on it-trying to read it right after coming off of BotNS might be a shock to people esp if they're expecting more of the same

thoughts on Long Sun? It kinda sucks it's not nearly as popular(I'd like some more artwork or discussions) but it's rare that series are as discussed as New Sun is when it comes to sci fi

You should prepare yourself for absolutely nothing happening, like holy shit the whole novel felt like a preface to the trilogy to come. So many plot threads started, none of them developed in any way - Kellhus' kids, Great Ordeal, White-Luck Warrior, Mimara, Sorweel and his buck slave. The trek through notMoria was pretty based.

Anyone ever notice how the "classics" are bad at being series? People routinely read thousands of pages worth of malazan or wheel of time or belgariad no problem. Me included. But reading past book one in the Space Odyssey series or Ender series or Dune series or Hyperion series or Forever War series or Rendezvous with Rama series is considered excruciating for most. And generally for good reason. Wolfe and Bakker are exceptions I guess but they're famous for their series to begin with, instead of individual books. What's going on here? Is it some kind of curse the really good authors suffer? Or is it just that series which maintain a consistent quality throughout are more easily and fondly remembered as such than series where book 1 completely overshadows the rest? Or is the problem that those "classics" just tell self-contained stories in the first book, making them easy to drop?

Your chronology is all over the place, but in earlier times, say before the late 80s, it was more expensive to publish and SF was a smaller niche. Some people are just one hit wonders. Like Simmons and Haldeman.

With the increase technological prowess of Virtual Reality, why haven't cyberpunk focus on it in their stories? Outside of Ready Player One, no cyberpunk series has discussed VR and the escapism it allows.

Not really a sci-fi fan but I read Hyperion to change things up after hearing about it for so long. I enjoyed the general premise (Hegemony, Shrike mystery Ouster conflict, AIs) but some of the individual stories were just awful, Soldiers, Poet and the Consuls tale at the end until the last few pages was an underwhelming denouement. I've heard the sequels aren't as good as the first? Without spoilers can someone tell me why?

Also I will give Simmons credit for his conception of the net, quite visionary for 89.
