You should read some summary instead.
Why? Because authors like Hegel are so complex that you should really immerse yourself in their work or just forget about it and try to get some general idea from some academic introduction, then leave it at that.
99% of people who have read Hegel have either: 1) not understood him; 2) understood him so superficially that whatever they say about him can and will be contested by an expert.
Also, you should know German.

Source: me. I have never read Hegel and know what a waste of time it would be for me to read him, given that I am not at all willing to spend six months immersing myself in Hegeliana. It's probably all wrong, anyway.
Same applies for Das Kapital, the Koran, the Summa Teologica, Being and Time, etc. These are books to be studied - even when they aren't good - not to be read.

>> No.19428401

>>19428359
Das Kapital isn’t that difficult, and that’s a silly way at looking at things, you read and study these books, not just study them.

you should start with the phenomenology of spirit and dedicate three months to it, that means SOLELY to it

>first month
read
>second month
read it again and drink two bottles of wine while doing so
preferably don't leave the house at all
>third month
read it again sober while listening to lectures on it ranging from John David Ebert to fucking school of life

now you have a core
think about it for one to four years and reapeat the process as many times as needed

once you feel fully ready (debated a few actual hegel scholars on it) you can move to the philosophy of history and to the philosophy of right, these do not require the same process

Beiser’s Hegel will provide you with the best secondary overview for starting out. While many recommend (with good reason, as Hegel saw it as the door to his system) starting with the Phenomenology, if it’s too “difficult,” his Lectures on Aesthetics, the History of Philosophy, and the Philosophy of World History may be a better place to turn to for familiarizing yourself with his prose and approach to philosophizing. Then you should get to the PdG, the Phenomenology: you can consult H.S. Harris, Stephen Houlgate, and Terry Pinkard for help. This text will take you through all the various subject-positions proffered by ancient and modern thought and guide you to a more truthful understanding of what human subjectivity and consciousness are, have been, and can be. The Philosophy of Right will then show you some of the social, political, and moral ramifications of the insights offered by the Phenomenology. And finally, the summary of his Science of Logic contained in the Encyclopedia, the “Smaller Logic,” will provide you with a concise account of his entire mature system from the ground up.

1. Beiser’s Hegel
2. sections of the Lectures on Aesthetics, History of Philosophy, and Philosophy of World History
3. Phenomenology of Spirit
4. Philosophy of Right

You answered your own question. He's basically only interesting and worthwhile for his attempted summary of the history of philosophy, which Nietzsche noted as his "historical sense." There's not much of value, apart from this exposition of historical sense, that doesn't suffer from the typical flaws of all of the philosophy prior to it, making it effectively meaningless as anything more than an intellectual gesture.

Have some respect for yourself and avoid this charlatan. If you still want to read him, consult some elementary manuals on the sciences and then begin with the Philosophy of Right and the Science of Logic. Read some of Kierkegaards criticism of his system to keep track of its limitations. This is important because his Lectures on Aesthetics complements the works I've outlined above and you need a through overview of his system which has to be impartial as possible. Hegel doesn't question his views enough for you to see it in a completely objective way, you need some criticism. From there on, his entire corpus is available but familiarize yourself with these three first.

Start with his early works or encyclopedias. Try to know the concepts. Works like PoS is confusing to read and confusing to interpret so read it slowly enough.
