19469354 No.19469354 [Reply] [Original]

Which e-reader do you own and do you like it? I'm interested in purchasing one, but have no clue as to which would fulfill my requirements. Any recommendations?

These are the features that I'd like to have:
>E-ink screen
>Supports lots of common file types (PDF, ePub, Mobi) unless there's a program to easily convert them
>Note taking
>Obviously no ads if there is a brand that has them then please tell me so I can stay far away from them

Perhaps weird maybe unnecessary:
>PROBABLY WANT TO AVOID AMAZON'S KINDLE PRODUCTS (WANT TO ALSO AVOID DRM)
>NO WIFI, NO BLUETOOTH, NO CONNECTION TO THE NET REQUIRED
>Transfer files from computer to device using a USB is preferred although directly plugging in is also fine I suppose maybe microsd slot again not that important

Not sure about screen size though or whether pixel density is important for something like this.

Nowadays I mainly use a Boox Max.
I also own a Kobo Aura One and a Kobo Glo HD.

Amazon is the only one with notable ads. Kobo has a shop but it's promoted the same way. If you keep the devices disconnected from the internet you won't notice much.
Pretty much all readers support pdf and mobi and USB transfer. Keep in mind that pdf designed for large books aren't going to work well on smaller screens. Zooming in and out isn't something you want to do all the time.

>>19469456
You can underline things you select in the reader but it doesn't support a stylus.
Kobo Sage and Mobiscribe Origin are the cheapest models with stylus support.

My Sony dpt cp1 is getting on in years, has a few dead-pixel lines, and in generally worse for wear. It has served me well but I think it's about time I got a new e-reader. Only stipulation is that it needs to be 10" or more and be able to highlight+mark pdfs. But looking around it seems coloured screens are the new thing so I was wondering if I should just wait until there's a 10" one of those from a respectable brand? Anything worth buying at the moment?

Fujitsu Quaderno is the successor to the Sony DPT.
Boox Note or Max is the most capable device
Kobo Elipsa is the most reputable brand
Supernote A5/A5X and Remarkable 2 are also an option.
The only color 10.3" is the Bigme B1.
The most interesting development right now is the Reinkstone R1 which uses a non-E ink electronic paper display:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ppWX-QIVno
It's been delayed for a few months and may never come out at all but if your CP1 is still usable you may consider waiting.

I live in Brazil so is very difficult and expensive to get books here, sometimes it takes months for the book to arrive sometimes you just cant buy them.
So I bought the basic most inexpensive amazon kindle and Its been amazing, im downloading for free(libgen, pdfdrive, mobilism) book after book, sometimes I have to convert to mobi theres is plenty sites that do it for free, Ive read like 30 books in my kindle since I bought it like 6 months ago, it was the best thing I did the device is amazing it has backlight and they allow me to download for free unlimited books, Ivw saved so much money! Im very happy with my kindle.

Get an kindle and just never connect it to the internet, eventually ads go away. When you load everything via calibre it converts everything to a format that the kindle can use so its no big deal.

I have a cheap Kindle. It is really good for getting books quickly and for bringing a lot of books with you when you travel, which I do a lot. The bookmarking and highlighting function kind of sucks though. Mine is several years old, it might be better now.

Perks are much better battery life than tablets, able to be read easily in the sun unlike tablets, and lack of light that hurts your eyes if you read in the dark for for long periods.

Downside is that the screen is kind of small and big screen ones are expensive. Color is either non-existent for most, or pretty bad. So they are ok for manga, which is almost always black and white, but shit for graphic novels, which are normally in color. 10 inch versions are about the standard size of manga. They also cost a lot more than 10 inch tablets but have many, many hours more battery life.

A main perk is that older books out of public domain can be picked up at will for free or very cheap.

How is the image quality? Is it worth it to get one with high ppi? How does it compare to a real book? I think im just going to get a smaller 6-8 inch one to start off and see if i like them maybe ill check the used market to see if theres cheap large ones.

I bought a 5$ sony e-reader off ebay that had no wifi, and used a PSP charger to charge. It had physical buttons and lasts about a day or so. They're old and the screen's kind of dim, but you can use a microSD. That's the cheapest you'll probably get.
I got my mom a Kobo Clara HD because it has library share support, she likes it. I upgraded last year to a boox Poke 3, and it does everything I want. Can run Tachiyomi, USB C, has wifi and bluetooth, and it's small and light so it's easy to stash and carry around.(about the same page size as a cheap paperback but very thin). I bought the first gen Oasis when it came out and had to return it after six months because the charging cover stopped working. The replacement lasted longer, but after 3? 4? years it's pretty fucked, I'm getting ghost touches and the battery is borked.

I just ordered a Boox Note 2, so I'll see if that sucks less. Looking forward to the big screen anyway, there's lots of PDFs I want to read.

I'm a big fan of the Kindle 3 with keyboard. I know it doesn't meet your criteria OP but I love
>buttons
>physical keyboard
>lightweight
And that's basically it. I'd switch to a more modern e-reader but they basically all suck in terms of buttons or a physical keyboard. The keyboard isn't even really necessary but I insist on buttons so I don't have to smudge up the screen while turning pages. I use it roughly 4 hours a day every day so it's a big deal to me.

If I ever find something with buttons like I like the next thing I'd look for ins increased pixel density since reading images on a Kindle 3 is basically impossible and it doesn't have PDF support and conversion via calibre is pretty shitty.

>> No.19477132

>>19477115
Just get a bluetooth keyboard and connect it to the various readers that support that.
You can also get bluetoth page turners so you don't have to touch the device at all.
The Boox Nova Air and Leaf have cases with page turn buttons. Kobo Libra and Sage and the Pocketbook lineup have buttons built in.

Kindles do support pdf but it's generally a poor experience due to the small screen, weak specs and lacking functionality.
Pretty much everything has a higher density than the 167ppi of the Kindle.

>> No.19477143

Getting physical add ons for button functionality defeats the goal of having a small and lightweight reader for me. I'm sure there's a perfectly good chinese knockoff version of the kindle 3 that's exactly what I want but I haven't looked for it when I can just buy kindle 3s off ebay for $40 a pop.

IIRC Kindle 3 does not have native pdf support, best calibre can do is turn it into images if it's a scanned PDF or a badly formatted mess if it's a text PDF.
