I have been depressed at many different points in my life. The progression of it never amounted to thoughts of suicide until I knew it was an option. I never thought about it. I would cry so much in my youth, most of which was middle school. Then I entered high school and took a “health class” the teacher was funny and different from all the other teachers. He was also male, another rarity among the public school system. He warned us about the dangerous of depression and suicide. He explained suicide and what it was. I was of course completely aware of what suicide is by the age of 15. The idea just seemed in of itself completely retarded. Though I am 36 now and I can’t remember why the idea of suicide was such a foreign concept. It’s not like I had no conception of what suicide was... The tie to life; the impression I would live forever was my default state. Slowly realizing my human condition and the struggle between acceptance I can die, will die, must die, but the pressing desire to live. To live forever. I have spent most of my life concerned about death. I found it completely intractable. How can I escape death, what is the point of living if I just die? I don’t have enough time to understand discover all that is. This concept is the human condition. This was all exacerbated by watching every episode of Frasier before I was even 10. People will blame various aspects of their up bringing that generally revolve around their parents. I started with this too. I think my desire to watch every episode of Frasier at such an early age has led to a deep confusion in me.

David Foster Wallace

I've made effort posts drawing the similarities before but I unironically think he is, or was, to the many lost young men today what DFW was to the college-aged yuppies of the 90s who came into academia all starry-eyed and left feeling alienated. Of course DFW wouldn't fit the zoomer zeitgeist and board culture of today - just as Peterson's message wouldn't resonate back then, but their life paths still take very similar paths. Including becoming internet memes who aren't taken seriously and are mocked for their personal struggles (see >>19512320 and replace drug addict with a rope joke)
At least Peterson has recovered. Poor Dave was too good for this world.

I don't think Peterson has recovered. I think he never got back. What's more, I think that the path that Peterson followed - bettering himself, seeking for the truth, helping others - and the way it ended - getting addicted to a drug that was prescribed to him by the world, one of the few things he didn't address as much (in, for example, cleaning up your room and fixing yourself before you try to fix the world) is the path that will be followed by and the ending that will befall many of the young lads who follow his ideas.
You may better yourself, but the world will pull you down. 21st century reality is a bucket of crabs the size of multinationals.
I think that the next DFW/Peterson is gonna be an anti-peterson, who will rebel against the world.
