He was probably influenced by the life of Dabba Mallaputta, a monk in the Buddha's time. Dabba's mother died while pregnant with him and was cremated, but he survived the fire. He became a monk and attained enlightenment at a young age, and once he was old and ready to die, he set himself on fire with his magic monk powers.

You can see in the sutra that his burning is being used to demonstrate that a enlightened being leaves no trace after death, because his body leaves no ashes.
