So I have just finished reading Illiad and wanted to read Divine Comedy next as it seems pretty interesting. Was just wondering what you guys think of the Penguin version?

I like it.

No Odissey nor Ennead? I suggest you read them, the divine comedy is full of references.

Not OP but do you need to read Virgil first? I'm holding off on Dante because I haven't read Virgil yet.

I read Odyssey before Illiad not realizing I should have read Odyssey first. Haven't heard of Enneads I'll look it up I'll read that before. Thanks

Not who you responded too but I read Inferno without reading the ancients. If I had to do it again I probably would have read them first as there is a fuck ton of references. Although there is just as many references to the politics, people, wars and other niche topics of the day that you won't know about, so as long as you have a copy with notes you'll be fine.

Virgil is literally a main character (not really a spoiler, he's in from the start) of the Divine Comedy.

Yeah I'd heard that's why I asked.

I'll probably wait then, since I'm not in any big hurry and I'm enjoying the Greeks and Romans already. Thanks.

My library doesn't seem to have The Enneads or Aeneid...where do I go with the Greeks from here. Bummer

A used bookstore will have a copy for less than $10, guaranteed. Also that's weird that a library wouldn't have a copy of something like that, can they get it through interlibrary loan?

Yeah you would think right? Perhaps it's their website and they actually do carry it. If not I'll keep the used book store suggestion!

Fuck, I mean Aenid, not Enneads, VIRGIL, NOT PLOTINUS.
In italian it's "Eneide", from there my confusion.

Don't get confused please.

Ahhh Aenid alright no problem anon. Thank you

I suggest also reading

Ovid's Metamorphoses
The Bible
The Consolation of Philosophy
Odes and Epodes
Vita Nuova - Dante
Civil War - Lucianus
St Augustine's Confessions
Overview of Aquinas

You gotta keep in mind that the Divine Comedy is very much built on all of these. It's historical theological fiction, so you definitely have to brush up on the history and the theology of Dante's life.

Also don't read Penguin translations ever please.
