20205280 No.20205280 [Reply] [Original]

Why do people debate online? Why do people spend so much time writing paragraphs worth of words just to prove someone else is wrong? Unlike real life discussions or debates no one actually going to change their mind after some retards on the internet told them to change their mind. Ultimately the goal of online debate is to make your opponent look stupid to the viewer not to change your opponent mind. It's not productive at all.

I get it if you have an audience like a sizeable blog or youtube channel but people do this on forums, imageboards, and YouTube comment section.

Marxists spend all their time debating online because their entire ideology just loser resentment driving violent revolution. They argue online because they are too weak to actually do anything since their opponents are much more intelligent and power than they are.

I absolutely fucking adore arguing with people. My autism flows out unrestrainedly in a shower of Akshually manna upon my trembling psychic limbs

But I learned at age like 11 that you can never ever do this irl with normalniggers, so I spent years cooping it up inside myself and being normal, until I discovered this site

Everything I do and say is done and said through the lense of shitposting an irony. "How can I make people mad?" Is the primary thought that goes though my head. If I'm "debating" I'm never trying to do anything but piss as many people off as I can. Shitposting is all there is on this circus of a urth

Why do you ask questions online? Do you really think that people are going to give you honest answers if people aren't willing to have their mind changed either?
>Why do people debate online?
To stress test my theories and reasoning or to get someone to explain something I don't understand. I don't argue about things I'm sure of, and if the other side veers off the topic I try to ask my original question again or otherwise bail. I'm not interested in arguing for the sake of arguing.
So far my skills at actually baiting people into writing articulate takedowns is lacking, when you challenge someone's expertise they resort to childish namecalling and denial instead of trying to own you with a display of their extensive relevant knowledge.

I see opinions I disagree with and it provokes me to think about why. I explain why I disagree, and then the other anon thinks more about his position. And then we both share our new insights, thereby enriching ourselves and possibly others. Why does everyone automatically assume malice or anger on our behalf? Why does it necessarily have to be a competition? Perhaps we haven't found a solution to the problem we were discussing. Maybe we even got a little more passionate than the situation required. But you can't convince me that it's "not productive" to have a hearty disagreement with my fellow anons.

Idk. I like to think it’s to learn and such and such and change others mind but I just noticed the one time someone changed my mind on something on this site I actually cared for and argued passionately about (argument about god and free will) I literally forgot his whole argument/points very soon after and now I literally hold the same views I did before just because I didn’t bother to remember his complete refutation to what I said

It is possible to change one's mind with a constructive, well-thought out debate. Unfortunately, most debates I see online are more akin to two monkeys screeching at each other, because the other side dared to have a different opinion and is not immediately dropping it to ask for forgiveness.

Stupid arguments on the internet have actually improved my critical thinking skills by a great margin. It's super easy for me to tell when someone is lying or skewering the truth now, and I can turn their asshole inside out with rhetoric so quickly I can predict their response before they even type it.

This is true of in person debates as well

Even at it's most sincere and intellectually charitative, debate is about convincing onlookers, not the other person.

I do it largely as practice in synthesizing and organizing ideas, which is much more fun in a live environment where those ideas can be challenged (sometimes forcing me to amend or change my idea entirely). Sure I could do it in a journal or blog or something bit then I dont get to interact with new ideas or new formulations of those ideas or encounter things I hadn't thought about (without difficulty anyway). of course this only applies to when the debate is good (not constant shit flinging, ad hominem, straw-manning, or simple troll bs). It is for these reasons as well that I like to post on obvious bait, like this thread here.

Uh have you seen how seriously people take Twitter?
Anyway humans are ultra social. Most of the talk humans do accomplishes nothing in the most concrete sense. It's not as if social interaction is the most practical way to do achieve anything. The internet just allows people to get the social interaction they naturally crave more easily and conveniently than ever before.

>> No.20206597

>>20205493
I agree with this. Also applies when you see an opinion you hold justified in a shaky way.
>>20206542
This as well. It's a specific case of challenging your ideas, which I think it's important. You can play devil's advocate on your own but it's way harder.

To all of this I'd add that arguing online is easier, particularly anonymously. You can listen to the opposition without social pressure, you can choose when to engange, you can think through your words carefully, etc.
