>> No.20217552

I remember when I was 21 facetiously asking the teacher why as it that we recognized a cartoon illustration of a horse as a horse when it in fact had no actually resemblance to a photo-realistic horse. He said something to the effect of "oh don't start that" with a irritated smile.
But now that I realize that my idea of the image or the photorealistic perception of a horse as being 'real' is sort of flawed, the image we see of a horse with our eyes is filtered through and interpolated by our visual cortex (among other faculties). It took me a long time to realize that.
I don't like the "map is not the territory" distinction. Aside from the fact that there are thousands of real world examples of maps affecting change on territory. What troubles me about it is this idea that the 'territory' isn't itself a 'map' - when you put your feet in the soil and look across the plain, you are still only observing your internal representation of the environment. Not the thing itself. This is apparent to anyone who understands that light is transmitted through waves and sound too.

>τοῦ ποιεῖν καὶ πάσχειν
It reminds me of like effect and affect. I know that it better translates as "doing/making and suffering". Their pairing reminds me of Newton's Third Law - that an object that exerts force also has force exerted on it. I remember once someone said that Newton formalized Aristotle's proximate cause. I think the word πάσχειν is a really useful word. Aristotle uses it both for natural phenomena like being heated or cooled, but also for feelings like being happy or vexed.
Because of Jerry Lewis I've become obsessed with the phrase "Who is doing what to whom?". All dramatic conflict, all comedy can be distilled to this phrase. Someone must be doing and someone must be 'suffering' (πάσχειν) otherwise the story or scene isn't interesting. Lewis used it specifically in the context of power relations. His model was Charlie Chaplain, the underdog who got his own back against those with more social standing. It's part of the reason he insisted on wearing a tailored tuxedo on stage, seeing someone in ratty old clothes fall over isn't as fully as seeing someone dressed like a millionaire fall over.
I wondered if this connected to Master-Slave dialectic. If the "slave" gets one over on the "master", that is funny for the same reason seeing someone in a brand new Savile Row tuxedo get a pie to the face is. But if the master gets one over on the slave, it's not.
πάσχειν implies passivity. In heterosexual terms unless a woman gives a blowjob she is invariably πάσχειν sex. The man however ποιεῖν sex.
It's interesting how comedians talk about 'killing' when they do well with an audience, but perhaps 'fucking' is a better analogy?

Unironically the happiest I've ever been is living as a deadbeat drunk, and as a patient in a mental institution. I've didn't have a favorite subject at school, never had a close friend, broken a bone, rode a bike, or peeled an orange all in one peel. That is because there is really nothing I enjoy. I don't even like books. They are only the one thing I don't hate.
People tell me things will get better but they only get worse. Now that I have my freedom I can see what kind of person I truly am. And I hate myself. Not even in the way that everyone, to a certain degree, hates themselves. I am stupid, cruel, and sick. I am an active detriment to the people around me and whether they know it or not they will breathe a sigh of relief when I take my life. Finally that freak has gone to their reward, and their days of suffering are over. They will think this but not say it. They will feel guilty but will have nothing to be guilty for; they gave me everything I needed to make a better life for myself and I squandered it all. I bear all the characteristic signs of a serial killer: I suffered a debilitating head injury as a child, I was a chronic bedwetter who tortured animals. To think I had for a time forgotten about that. My parents promised me ice cream if I would stop throwing the family dog down the stairs. I refrained from throwing the family dog down the stairs for a week and they took me out for ice cream. When we got home I threw the dog down the stairs again.
There is no end to the superlatives my family sends my way in an effort to stop me from killing myself. I am stupid, really, but I am slightly smarter than them so they compliment me for it, though they know the truth and will not say it. You only have to see how I fare in the real world and my stupidity had ought to be too apparent to deny. But again, my family is stupid.
One of my formative experiences as a child was when I lost my grip on a balloon and had to watch as it sailed away out of sight. I asked my mom to do something, to go after it but of course she could do nothing. It was too high up. There are some things parents can't do for you. I am living evidence of that. They gave me everything I ever wanted and when I went out into that big wide world it licked me something awful. I made every single mistake there is to make. There are secrets now that I will take to my grave. It's funny how lying works. When you have one really big one, when you live a lie, all the little ones come much easier. I'm going to hell anyhow, why not tell one more? You keep going like that until every little thing in your life is a fabrication. You learn how to lie to yourself too, which is really amazing. I thought I was at least smart enough not to do that. I hate the stupid for being stupid. I begrudge the intelligent their intelligence. I hate myself for typing all this out. Now I am hopelessly sober. Alcohol was the one way I thought I could escape castration, though that too is stupid. Sneed

A comedian 'fucks the audience'. Hmmm... Laughter is a lot like an orgasm.
The ancient greeks always threw in a comedy as a palette cleanser for the tragedies, since then the iconography of the comedy and tragedy mask has left the two genres and emotions tied together.
but isn't horror closer to comedy than tragedy?
What are the most physiological of emotions? The tears of despair, the orgasm of sex, the laugh of comedy, and the scream of terror. Maybe the vomit of disgust? What physiological manner is associated with the 'sublime' - or is that what makes it different? At any rate all are the result of the body being acted upon.
Comedy is really close to Horror, especially toilet humor, all the body fluids and shock tactics. There is a great importance on timing.
Why is porn seen as socially unacceptable, but cooking shows are? (I guess most cooking shows don't show the act of eating?)
Why is horror seen as lowbrow but comedy is generally accepted like cooking shows?
Porn and Horror are seen as serving baser and primitive urges, which is also why they are academically fascinating. They can be seen as portals into the unspoken or even unconscious desires of a society. But comedy despite being just as primitive, just as universal isn't? I know Freud wrote about jokes and believed that it was related to being 'uncensored'.
Is a comedian fucking an audience a apt or accurate analogy?
Is the audience passive?
Do Daniel Day Lewis or Meryl Streep similarly fuck their cinematic audience?
