Just recently quit my Ph. D in Literature program and my 11 year career as a Professor.

Don't bother trying to get a Ph.D if you're in the Humanities, you're wasting your time and most importantly money, it's a circus.

The title of professor is given out more freely in the US
In the US it's essentially anyone who teaches in university

Not really. The title professor is for phds. Just because you teach at a community college and the students call you professor does not mean you are a professor. If you say you were a professor of English lit on a job application it will probably kill your chances of getting the job unless it is something like bar tender at red lobster.

This. You're (((technically))) pushing the frontiers of knowledge in your specific field - you should be being paid to do this. If you're the one paying to advance a field you've literally lost the game kek.

>wasting your time and most importantly money
Your mistake was not going to where it's significantly cheaper to do. PhDs in France and Germany, at public universities, are at most €600/year (basically $600) and that's even for foreigners. For the latter this applies to bachelors and masters as well.

>wasting your time
I feel the reason you study to then eventually teach at an academic institution is so that you're making your passion your living meanwhile also having some status and respect. Yes, some of your time will be chores but most of it not, then a lot of will be things perhaps you're not as interested in teaching but it's still related to your interests. If you work a 40hr/week job in IT, for instance, you are not developing any of your skills as a writer.

They're cheap because they're not respected. Those discount fees reflect the calibre of research coming from those institutions and the mediocrity of the faculty. USA and UK is where it's at for any self respecting academic.

>Eurofag cope right there. They're good enough if you don't give a shit about your field and just need the paycheck.
What a vulgar, coarse way of thinking.
It depends what you're going into it for. If you just want to live your passion more closely, as I stated in my post, then it's perfectly good enough. And for things like humanities really the collective is not relevant, only on the individual level is anything good produced in the first place. Yes the intricacies of good prose might be valued a little more elsewhere but what matters is the creative work itself which is a separate thing. Also one can genuinely argue the validity of how these lists are produced.

>The title professor is for phds.
The title of "doctor" is for PHD and above, and a lot of professors with a doctorate will get pissy if you only refer to them as "professor" for this reason. It's used generically in US college for anyone teaching courses and usually replaces "teacher" or "Mr./Mrs." past high school.

all that's required to teach credit courses in accredited institutions is a masters. you can most definitely be a professor with only a masters, but you won't get paid as much. in the case of community colleges there are a lot of non-credit developmental classes for chuds who smoked weed through high school and need to relearn basic reading and math. those classes can be taught by anyone with a bachelors. the fact that people on /lit/ are this confused about the education industry is somewhat disturbing.

Not only that, staring 40 hours a week at a computer screen feels fundamentally diametral to the creation of art. It's simply not the right life for an artist. You're better of hallucinating as Vincent van Gogh on some French countryside due to calcium deficiency.
