Shakespeare is LITERALLY intended to be watched as a production. Obviously things are going to fly over your head if you're just reading transliterated folios that often are missing liner notes and do not capture the nuance of a line's delivery or a character's personality.
Try reading a really good modern screenplay's script and see how much goes under-developed without the addition of all the extra dimensions of acting and staging.
