This is a banger. It exposes the relationship between sex and death, allowing one to understand every epochs social life off of its sexual practice. From courtly love’s meaning for medieval life to why porn is such a brain fry today.

Today we are running away from actual eroticism and transgression, just as we are death, because sex via pornography has basically become a video game.

This is where the nofap losers actually get something right. The massive dominance of maturation over their life, the guilt machine it produces, is obviously an illusion: their life is shit anyway, people with good lives don’t care about their porn habits really and actually have good nuts. However, what they properly recognize is that porn is a valuable microcosm of their failures of desire. In their porn habits, their life’s decay reveals itself because they continuously chase empty flat pleasures and lack any true risk or transgression.

Eroticism shows us that because we’re so bad at attaining the mystical unity of sex, or the mystical excess attained by the courtly love practices of saving one’s sperm, never consummating but keeping that energy, we are exhausted creatures scared of death and disillusion. Loveless losers who can’t even feel pleasure or desire beyond infantile need.

Bataille is delusional. He is a horny librarian who wrote in order to further decay Western morals, did everything for shock value, and wanted to sacrifice a human in his lame french group but no one had the balls to actually carry it out, they all just wanted to be sacrificed.

On the other hand, Nick Land really likes him, but that was prior to his enlightenment.

This book is really garbled. I can't tell if it's Bataille here or the translation, but his musings on eroticism were much more cogent in Volume 2 of The Accursed Share, which was ironically unfinished to my knowledge.

That was already done by Baudelaire, and before him Keats, and before him Shakespeare, and before him etc.....

keep seething, the entire planet is going to be potlached to itself, massive human sacrifice in the form of the next few decades of wars, famines, floods, droughts... the last vestiges of slave morality will die by necessity since it will be suicidal not to sacrifice. Bataille's surrealist cohort at the time could not begin to imagine there was anything after class conflict because they considered political power to be the only valuable resource and what vanguardist would literally sacrifice his chance at attaining it? But in our lifetimes we may live to see actual power become scarce, keeping the lights on and not keeping seats in a government is the struggle! How much will you be willing to jettison in contest with the other survivors of this century, those who've decided bunkers and floating palaces on the ocean are the answer to the crisis of a general economy ready to pop? Not to achieve communism—as the machine will have defeated the worker—but to achieve sovereignty?
