Read a prose English translation. The Iliad was sung in meter because that was the narrative medium of its day. These days we read novels and watch TV. An English version sung in some other meter is just as distant from the original.

You are correct but for the wrong reason. The reason why they were transmitted orally was because the poetry rhymed, so they were able to "sing" it. Unless you listen to a greek audiobook you won't get the original experience.
