This. Plus it’s always nice to see the interests of people in the same community as you. Some anons seem to get it backwards; an anon comes to /lit/ because of his interest in reading, having books is often part of reading, not anons buy books because they started out on /lit/ and buy books to impress the board. Too many anons are concerned with how others spend their money and wanting to believe an anon doesn’t read because he has books in good condition or just wants to impress people. I disagree. While fundamentally an egotistical endeavor, collecting books can have the possible added impact of an individual's personal investment in literature: a catalogue of ideas, stories, and experiences that a person has gone through to where they are now. Funko pops are entirely consumerist because they don't DO anything - their sole purpose for existence is to be obtained and possessed. They are more akin to women in this sense than they are literature and the information books contain.

This. I’m almost thinking it’s trolling at this point. If someone spends money and devotes space for a sizable collection of books, there is an overwhelming chance that person reads. No one has a book case full of Walter Scott, Zola, Lawrence, and Buzzati paperbacks to impress people because the non reading public doesn’t know who the fuck they are. No one is trying to impress /lit/ because of anonymity, and the reason anons come here in the first place is because they read. No one stumbles upon /lit/, liked it here, and decides to build up a collection to impress the community. It’s the other way around. People who read (which includes people with physical books) come here for their hobby. If shelf and stack threads bother you so much, just scroll past them. What the fuck did you just fucking say about me? My dad is a member of not one but two very active bookclubs. The Manly Bookclub and The Gentleman's Bookclub. The later is a pretty traditional bookclub and mostly retired teachers. The former is also mostly teachers but skews younger and is decidedly non-traditional. It has been going for at least 8 years now. They take it really seriously but also goof around and make it really fun; one member was put on double secret probation and made to wear the robe of shame for not finishing the book 2 times in a row. They do all sorts of activities around the books e.g. going to a falconry when they read a book with falconry, and have almost turned it into a pseudo secret society. First rule of bookclub is that you dont talk about book club (but of course talk about it all the time). They have a charter, bylaws, and keep minutes. They have multiple homemade trophies and commissioned a coat of arms. They have a summer retreat every year. They held a viking funeral for a member who moved away. It is work but it gives my dad a lot of joy and I think it's longevity means they're doing something right.

Those are most likely the anons who actually read. I’m not one of those “ereaders don’t count” anons. Read however you want. I like physical books. If an anon has an issue with it that is their problem. I’ve got lots of good info, recs and discussion in stack/shelf threads. They are fairly troll proof except for the spine inspector and funko pop anons. The threads tend to stay alive longer than most too. I’m beginning to believe it’s sour grapes. Times are tough and anons want to have a library but can’t or dont

I would laugh but I nonironically also feel bad for you. Read literally anything on Plato, Aristotle, or Cicero...

Not eben worth replying though, meta threads will be ignored. Personally I have books in pretty great condition, even when I thrift them, and don't have fucked up spines even when reading them. but retards will swear I didn't read it. which is fine, except now there are entire threads crying about it. If I made a thread to talk about a book after finishing it, with an effort post attached, it gets ignored or retard one line replies get made before it just 404s. Fuck this gay board, I'll just read books and find archives from years ago when people actually discussed shit here when I want to see discourse.

That was the point dumbass. Plato's entire work was lost and "out of print" for about 1000 years. Cicero has large chunks of work missing. Translations go out of print and scholarly works are sometimes hard to find because of that.
I know this may sound crazy to someone used to 50 shades of gray and twilight but...

I have Plato’s collected works. It definitely isn’t out of print. You’re really grasping at straws if your example was pre printing press

I deal with the same. It would be easier to ignore if it was once in a blue but it’s every thread. I posted itt wondering why anons are even here if they don’t want to believe that anons read. I don’t get it. It also has a demoralization aspect because I’m sure they get retards who don’t realize you can read a book with minimal wear to believe that the rumors are true- “the board doesn’t read!”, so why should they? Anons need to realize that it isn’t a competition and it’s okay if other anons have read books they haven’t

I have a library but I keep the books and magazines in totes inside ziplock bags.
It's more of memory/knowledge bank for my future children, so If I die before I can teach them, they can know what I was interested in,thinking about and learning.

I'm only interesting in reading entertaining books. 90% of my shelves are sci-fi and fantasy, most of the rest are literary classics.
I don't read non-fiction except for Wikipedia, scientific articles, and textbooks because I literally don't see the point.
