My editor’s making me use the pronoun “she” instead of “they” for nongendered hypothetical examples of a person doing stuff. I cannot conceive of anything more stupid.

Can you fire the bitch?
Ask her about using "one" instead.

Editor is an employee of the writer and can not make the writer do anything unless you write shit tier fad following genre schlock and are a contract writer or an employee of the publisher, etc and if you are who cares just do your job and move on.

This reeks of larp.

If you are writing academic shit then you follow the required style guide to the letter or you don't get published. Editor is not forcing anything, just knows the requirements of the journal or publisher and knows if you stray from the style guide too often it won't get published.

Even if this were OPs case still reeks of larp, can't imagine anyone getting to the point of publishing academic works but not understanding the purpose of style guides.

when the style guides suggestions are crap, you should disregard them.

I’ve only seen this happening in the United States. And since English speakers are genetically unable to do philosophy:

Not being able to conceive of anything more stupid than using a gendered pronoun for hypothetical persons is more stupid. There, I helped you out of your intellectual rut. Pay it forward.
