What does /lit/ think of Apocalypse Now? I think it's relevant to this board because it is influenced by a shitload of good literature and can be interpreted many different ways like the best books.

Also, recommend other movies as ~deep~ as this one.

I think it rather violent for my taste. I could not stand Conrad very highly for that fact

>> No.2285129

I think it's one of the best movies ever made. But Heart of Darkness and Aguirre: Wrath of God are both better.

>> No.2285134

>>2285121
There's way more influence than Heart of Darkness here; there's Faust, Oedipus Rex, mythological mainstays, and Eastern religious influences, among others.

>> No.2285146

>>2285134
I wasn't saying Heart of Darkness is the only influence, I just think it's better

>> No.2285159

Oh, and other good movies:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Wings of Desire
The Decalogue
The Singing Detective (miniseries)

Ofcourse. But that is not readily apparent to some people

I wasn't quoting you. Also, I don't think Heart of Darkness is too good for comparison as it was only a loose guideline. Apocalypse Now has bigger influences, the biggest one probably being Freud.

I know, the beauty of the movie is that the people who watch it as "just a war movie" and hate it for not living up to their expectations as such prove the message of the movie.

Also, did anyone else notice how The Big Lebowski works as a good "spiritual" successor to this film? I think they compliment each other perfectly.

Blade Runner is also one of my favourite movies!

>> No.2285188

My favorite. I also enjoyed the final cut of Blade Runner and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. movie... oh, and also The Deer Hunter, except most of the first half. Wish I could think of more.

I love movies like Deer Hunter and Apoc now but for the outrageous amounts of violence.

Also "Y tu mama tambien" transforms me to some sort of Bolano dream world every time I watch it. Mexico seems so unreal in film and literature

They both have the same theme, but from different perspectives: the psychological and social relationship between genders. While Apocalypse Now's message is about how men have dominated civilization by suppressing the more primal female side of ourselves, The Big Lebowski's is how after the fall of communism, men have been slowly losing their prized order and identity while women have been usurping them.

It's also interesting to apply Nietzsche's Apollonian vs Dyonisian dichotomy to them, which, of course, influenced Freud's Oedipus complex.

In the end, though, both films seem to argue for a return to a balance between the inherent differences of the sexes.

What multiple interpretations are you talking about?

While the motifs and themes are very diverse the story is rather straight forward

Have you seen Amores Perros? I think it's directed by the same guy.

Fucking amazing film.

Deep is kinda relative but I always thought Once Upon A Time In The West was quite an epic and would make a great novel.

Be warned though, if you haven't seen it, it's like 3 hours long and very, very patient with its pace. Sergio likes to take his time.

As far as "deepness" goes (I think I just gagged writing that), Apocalypse Now isn't up (or down) there.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love it. It's a cinematic tour de force, but it's pretty goddamn straight forward.

It's closer to the story side of the spectrum, if one side is straight plot and one side is open ended barely representational art.

If you're looking for something "deeper", try Bergman, Renoir, Jodorowsky (don't give me shit, once you get past the initial absurdity all of his stuff has a really solid base).

Well those are 3 completely unrelated director recommendations, but go with it. You shouldn't be disappointed.

I'm also well aware that I sometimes don't make sense. Go with it.

How about you just suggest a few flicks by these so called deep directors.

Or is recommending directors instead of films the hipster/cool/intellectual thing to do?

Wild Strawberries, Winter Light (Bergman's masterpiece), Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Bergman's got a ton.

Grand Illusion, The Human Beast, Rules of the Game for Renoir.

El Topo, Holy Mountain, Fando y Lis for Jodorowsky.

Is the little baby happy? I forgot you didn't know how to use the internet and do some research on your own, faggot.

Are you retarded or something? First, I'm a Tarkovsky devoted fan and I've watched Сталкер like a hundred times, so please, do not relate your discapacity to my supposed ignorance, fucking autist cunt.

Let's point out this really clear, to see if you can finally understand. Stalker is a movie, a great one. Now S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a videogame franchise developed by GCS, recently dead. You wrote it fucking wrong. See the difference? I honestly hope you see it.
