What is the most useful book you've read and why?

Which book do you return to over the years and why?

"Useful" can be defined as the best reference for a certain topic (or digest of multiple topics); in other words, a trove of information that you found useful and valuable. Extra points for keeping for years, highlighting and dog-earing it.

picture unrelated; cod and chips is nice

Fried potatoes of any sort are called fries. Only some rotten-toothed, stinking brit with his brain addled by centuries of alcoholism and incest would ever think to call them chips.

Far from high-brow, but the books I turn to most often are Viz annual editions. I've been reading them since I was ten and even now they still never fail to make me laugh. I've probably read the better ones from start to finish at least ten times. The best sketch is The Modern Parents.

Maybe not 'useful' in the most practical sense of the word, but nothing which causes so much delight regardless of my mood can be 'useless'.

This book has been useful in explaining to Britfags why they are the scorge of humanity and why they owe the world trillions of "pounds" in reparations for the evil they've brought to the world, including how they invented machine guns, genocide, concentration camps, and encoraged Marxism, the greatest evil of all. I turn to it almost every day.

Those Are Real Bullets: Bloody Sunday, Derry, 1972 by Peter Pringle and Phillip Jacobson.

This book is useful in explaining to the English why the IRA are not terrorists but innocent freedom fighters, how the English are repressive, totalitarian, exploitative evil murderers and how and how Ireland only wanted to be free.

frankly, in most of these countries, the choice is between dictatorial military regimes or religious zealots, because those are the two groups that have any kind of power. military has force, religious zealots have popular support and discipline. in any state w/o well-ingrained democratic norms, it's going to be really hard for middle-class liberal democrats to attain any kind of popular power. we see this tendency throughout the middle east (and analogous tendencies, replacing "religious zealots" with w/e ideology has the most support amongst the lower class, throughout the world outside of western europe, USA, canada, japan).

You clearly don't. The main is waaaay more qualified to be cited as a source than Ann fucking Coulter. She came to my town and caused a traffic delay for over an hour when I was trying to get home from work, a trip that normally takes 10 minutes. And the Republic of Plato. Allan Bloom translation.

Both are splendid for a variety of functions.
