Hey guise, Gaskun here. I hope you each had a merry Xmas and possibly found time to work on your projects or read something during the holiday. I don’t tend to post much anymore but it’s for a good reason; I’ve been writing. And now that the project is done I can share the news with you. After 16 months Ive finished a brand new high fantasy series. 4 books, 80k words 88k 120k and 100k words each. It’s a story about a faun messenger girl who while traveling across the land delivering letters comes across a young prince fleeing for his life after his uncle has found a lich to kill his parents and subjugate the kingdom. The pair travel on in search of help which brings together a group of new friends and allies as they are relentlessly pursued across a land of wonder and magic by evils big and small. (Pic related) it’s the rough drafts in manuscript boxes. I always print, box and shelve the first draft. If you have something to share I’d be happy to hear about it

Hey Gaskun, good to hear you're still killing it.

How can I read your space opera? I haven't been able to find it.

I'll contribute to the thread as well since I'm starting on a high fantasy story come January 1 (Would have started on the 30th but the family wants to do a bunch of stuff for New Year's)

It'll involve two impoverished wizards (along with 4 other characters who will get a little less focus from me) being called upon to embark on a Lewis-and-Clark-esque expedition into an untamed frontier. This uncharted land is host to a wide variety of fantastical creatures, hostile forces of nature, and the ruins of an ancient civilization of Snow Elves, as well as the sparse colonies of the conquerors thereof.

I'll smash out an outline in the bits of time I'll have on the 30th and 31st. I've spent two whole years worldbuilding this setting so I have *plenty* of details already ironed out.

Pic unrelated; I just thought it was neat.

Her name is Hoxley, a messenger. Prince Damron is a bit of a spoiled brat but perhaps after spending time with Hoxley, the mage/witch trio of Ignatius and his younger twin siblings Robert and Siouxsie, Morell,a timid but bright boy who collects mushrooms to study their effects, Atticus, an aging mercenary, and Loxo the thieving sky pirate, as well as a girl made of shadows, he might learn enough along the way to learn what it means to rule a kingdom if he can survive.

no hate, I am just wondering. I don't mean to bring negativity into your thread but
how do fantasy writers cope with the fact that they have absolutely miniscule chances of writing anything original.
Unironically kind of admirable to write something without the hopes of being original, writing just because you like it.
Based OP, I wish you luck.

I’ll be honest, it’s hard to look at the genre without seeing Tolkien and Gary gygax staring back at you. But the genre is a framework, a set of rules. My story is original, although it clings to tropes established by someone else. I tried to incorporate a little final fantasy black and white mage action, and the 1980’s dungeons and dragons Saturday morning cartoon, but the plot twist is essentially from a. Comic book I read in the 90’s (ninja high school #5). Being GenX, I write about charcaters that are adolescents but don’t get caught up in the “YA” tropes because that shit didn’t exist when I was growing up so there’s no post hunger games Katniss Everdeen “she was a pretty girl but though herself very plain” bullshit that sucks the air out of the room. I believe the work stands on its own but I definitely see what your point is.

They have to realize that every story has already been told. I bet Tolkien couldn't look at The Hobbit without seeing Beowulf staring back at him.

It's about what the author adds to the ideas they're building off of. A fantasy (or any genre) author is putting their perspective, their voice, onto an already-established set of ideas, warping and bending it into something familiar, yet distinct.

In chemistry, compare diamonds to carbon nanotubes, or water to hydrogen peroxide. Both substances in either case use the exact same parts (Carbon in one, Hydrogen and Oxygen in the other) but are wholly distinct.

Besides, it's a whole lot more original than ChatGPT will ever be.
