I have a friend from Moscow. According to him Tolstoy is more popular but both authors are widely read. He compared it to Orwell being probably more well known than Steinbeck, but the degree of separation not being huge.

I am a Russian. My first (and probaly the last) post on this garbage. We like both of them. Someone prefer Dostoyevsky for his "deep and dark" psychology, someone more enjoy Tolstoy for the way he writes reality. It is old and stupid battle between two tribes - Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy, Pepsy or Coca-Cola?
