I'm reading the first Dune book on audio. I'm kind of obsessed despite the prose and dialogue being, like, pretty bad? Everyone speaks and talks to themselves with an affected air of importance, which I guess is intentional, but it comes off as pretentious and cheesy. Yet I love the lore and imagery and I've heard the sequels are really good, so I'm going to read them all in consecutive succession. The writing is retarded though. In fact I've tried to read Dune multiple times in the past and it was always the writing that turned me off. I'm reading on audio now however and the narrator does a really good job and the cheesiness is more palatable I think because then at least a talented narrator can make it entertaining.

Every now and then you get a wake up call that makes it clear to you just how fucked up and lost the majority of modern people are. She's energetic, probably smarter than me, driven, full of life. I think she's also done with Mormonism since she hasn't been going since she moved out for college but I don't really know and it feels incredibly hard to reach out to her to ask. When I wished her a happy birthday she at least said thanks, so there's something, I guess. Sometimes I lie awake at night full of anxiety over the thought of her getting hurt or getting wrapped up in something bad.
My youngest brother is something of a zoomer/gen-alpha stereotype; he has a discord, games all day, started putting weird pronouns in his steam bio. He's actually a lot more social than me or my older brother, somehow. I have a really hard time talking to him because I just never know what to talk about besides gaming. Some nights I also get really anxious about him and I wish I could have been a better role model for him as he grew up.

Lately when I visit home I end up feeling like a massive burden and outsider compared to everyone else in the family, who seem to have a bond I'm excluded from, or that I was simply never aware of until recently. All I end up thinking about as I toss and turn in my old bed is how I really just ended up causing trouble for these people, how they deserved someone better as a family member, how my relationships with each of them have slowly withered over the few years since I moved out.

I had a doctor's appointment today and the doctor seemed shockedand worried about me and she said that the last time she saw me a month ago I seemed like I was getting better and that time I was visibly much more calm than previous times like not anxiously tugging my hair and rocking back and forth as much but today I seemed a lot worse like very tired and lethargic and upset that’s what she told me and she said it seemed like from the assessment quizzes and from talking to me it seemed like my mental health was rapidly deteriorating in a way she had not expected since she added Zoloft and she said she was concerned and she said did something happen recently that upset you because it really seems like something is going on or is it just the new medication what do you think is causing this and I said yeah something bad happened but also I think it’s the new medicine because I couldn’t tell her everything how I’ve been so upset about you being mad at me on valentinrs day and hating me forever and how I can’t stop thinking about it because I didn’t want to cry and I only tell my therapist about that and the doctor said never take any more Zoloft because clearly it is making things worse only take Wellbutrin from now on and you will get better because the Wellbutrin was making you better before?? I'm reluctant to call whatever the hell I've been feeling "depression," because I don't think i'm clinically anything. Ill just say that ive felt as though im dragging an anvil everywhere i go. Everything is grey. Getting up in the morning is hard. Working is hard. Finding joy in anything that i used to find joy in, hasn't happened in a long time. Some days I just want to breakdown, but I dont even have the emotion to do that. The only thing I feel is bitterness. I was, and still am to some degree, in a bad way.

And I think that's going to make my life a lot better.

I've never been an overly empathetic person. If you're an alcoholic, just stop. If your fat, stop eating. Unless your wife just died or you just got put on the street, I probably didn't think things were that bad.

Now, after feeling the crushing reality that is everyday life, I understand it all. How isn't everyone an alcoholic? How isn't everyone self medicating? In fact, my life isn't even bad. I have lots of things to be thankful for. I know people with less. I used to find a lump on my body, and think the worst. Every time I got a call from the doctor saying it was nothing. Well, for lots of people, that lump is something to worry about and the doctor has some bad news. Everyone is going through that, all the time. And still, people give up their seat on the metro. They get up and go to work everyday. They keep moving. I never understood the pain that everyone has to live with, and now I understand a bit better.

I also picked up, what I hope will be some good habits. As I alluded to earlier, I learned that self medicating is not a great long term solution. I slowed down on the booze alot, and I think that will be a good thing. But nothing was a magic cure. I forced myself to work out, eat a bit better, call the few people that I love. That all helped a bit, atleast temporarily.

I even opened up the bible. I never considered myself an atheist, but l hadn't been to church since I was about 14. I got confirmed and then forgot about it completely. Even then, I was really just going through the motions. For the first time, ive read and thought deeply about what it means to believe in god, and the responsibility that represents. That being catholic is hard work. I think, though Im not sure, that will be an important part of my life.

Lastly, I guess im grateful that it forced me to reeavulate my "purpose" or whatever the fuck you call it. All i know is what I was doing was not it. The jury is still out on if I made the right choice, but I know I have to follow it with all my efforts, and if its not the right choice, recalibrate and try again, and again, and again.

So, although I am still miserable, things seem to be improving, and I think that feeling as low as I did, for as long as I did, might be one of the best things to ever happen. Or maybe things will actually get alot worse.

In the past, people like me would die very young from health problems, or if we survived that, die as a result of bullying or suicide related to that, or if not, we'd end up homeless because there weren't government benefits and then die on the streets.
