[spoiler]Books are not stupid little videogames or whatever other nerdshit you guys argue about. YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE A SIDE! You can go from TKaMB to LoTR if you damn well please.

Well, this thread is for those who are in the mood for a little fantasy.
Yes, everything /lit/ says about them is true. They are often generic, childish, poorly written, etc...
Eragon is a great example of popular but shitty fantasy. However, there are others out there are are decent, even just mediocre.

let's discuss them.

I for one loved The Amulet of Samarkand.</spoiler>

[spoiler]Also..hey op, my girlfriend's into these kind of books and she loves dragons and fantasy. What would be the best gift to give her?
I already bought her the game of thrones, but I'm scared it'll be shit since it's so popular.

Also, English isn't our mother tongue so I'd be great if I could order a hardcover book online in English, especially if it isn't available in our area.

Most books written in English here are either shitty pocket editions or generic crap for the Hallmark soccer mom.</spoiler>

I like Mistborn.

[spoiler]The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie is pretty good.

I'm currently on the 3rd book of the trilogy. The characters are really well built and the plot has got magical themes but not overly outlandish. The writing itself is top class to boot. I highly recommend this series.</spoiler>

>> No.2327875

[spoiler]For others interested in Australian literature, check out the Second Sons trilogy by Jennifer Fallon.

Its fantasy without magic. The plot revolves around a very talented young man thrown into the midst of political intrigue and how he has to use his genius and cunning to survive. As with most female authors, romance also comes into play in the plot, but Jenifer Fallon's females aren't the typical and boring Mary Sue characters. Fallon's talent at creating dialogue that comes natural means that the characters in her book are very vividly fleshed out.

A highly gripping and suspenseful read with a satisfying conclusion that wraps up the intricacies of the overall plot.</spoiler>

>> No.2327881

[spoiler]Those who are interested in fantasy stories set in the modern world should check out the Monster Hunter International series by Larry Coreia.

The first 2 books of the series revolve around an accountant, who after tossing his werewolf of a boss out of the window, ended up in a monster hunting career.

The story is fast paced, full of action and humour. The author puts a twist on the general perception of how elves, orcs and other mythical creatures should be. Vampires and werewolves feature heavily, but unlike Twilight, they feature often in the presence of heavy firearms, flamethowers and melee weapons.

There's no plot and emotional rollercoaster in this book. Everything's just a fast paced, thoroughly enjoyable train ride.</spoiler>

I now only wonder if they will stay together or not and it's really distracting from the story, still very good.Just as the characters said now its gotten very complicated.

[spoiler]The Bartimaeus Trilogy was fantastic and is one of the only YA fantasy novels I devoured in my early-mid teens that I can still stomach. Interesting magic system, characters, plot, etc. The last book especially was excellent, very well paced.

Other fantasy books I've greatly enjoyed:
-A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. Whatever you may say about its popularity, it's a deeply engrossing read, especially the first three.

-The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. Might be my favorite fantasy series ever. The definition of a book you can't put down.

-Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, most people who like Night Angel will like this and vice versa.

-Warbreaker also by Brandon Sanderson.

-LOTR is great but I would read it for very different reasons than almost any other fantasy.</spoiler>
