>Why does /lit/ hate this book?

Because people exist who do not hate it.

Something I really enjoyed about the Dune series (and which was probably accidental on Frank Herbert's part) was how nothing was ever described in full physical detail. The architecture, the guild heighliners, the spice processing machines, the navigators themselves... Even Leto II, in the throes of worm transformation, doesn't get an all-encompassing description.

There are snarls and scraps of information--the webbed hands and feet of navigators, or the insectile nature of the harvesting machines--but that's it.

I think it inspires the imagination a lot more than an overwrought China Mieville can. It's also led to a lot of interesting interpretations of how the Dune universe looks in artwork, television series, and the movie.

I did not know that /lit/ hates God Emperor of Dune. It's definitely a little on the dry side and if I recall, I didn't care about much that happened in it until the last 150 pages but I still liked it.

But it does

It's like the only dune book they bitch and moan about

I noticed this, too!

Even the glowglobes and the clothing; only the vaguest details. "A white tunic that forces the viewer to focus on the wearer's face" is a prime example. What the hell does THAT mean? I think it must've been diliberate. I see it as Herbert painting a rough outline of a picture and allowing the reader's imagination to color it in.

I think this also allows for incredible variations in the multitudes of Dune art that the books inspired. Each reader must envision the 'thopters completely differently and that makes the universe seem all that more alive.

I'm a little under halfway through this book as we speak. So far it's hard to put down. I don't know why /lit/ would hate it as you say but then again I don't come to /lit/ all that often.

Because it's not Infinite Jest.

Wut. A substantial portion of /lit/ looks down on more or less all sci-fi, and for reasons that the Dune books are certainly not free from.
