THIS IS NOT A DEBATE

Dear /lit/,

Lets face it, most of the Internet is outspokenly Atheist / Agnostic. I was hoping to do a survey of /lit/ on what it's beliefs are in that regard. Note, this is what you actually believe, not what you are nominally.

Please no trolls. /lit/ seems to be one of the most ideologically diverse places on the webs and I think it would be cool to see some demographics. If we get enough posts, I will post the results in a few days.

I think location should be added as well. You're right that most of the Internet (referring to 4chan/reddit I'm guessing, not facebook or likewise) is outspokenly Atheist. But remember that it's most common for someone who participates in these arguments to be from some relatively secular place - almost anywhere in europe, most places in US, etc - but others are from places where at least the question of religion is closer to the front of the mind.

Faith is one of the most integral aspects of the human psyche, even if many don't possess it. It's for this reason that I find it beyond fascinating, even beneficial. I see faith as a struggle between impartial scientific method and the basic natural human need for solace, answers etc. When it comes to the question of the existence of a supernatural being, I see the question as a scientific one, which is why I'm atheist. But to me faith is far more something that belongs in the realm of the human consciousness.
I wish many atheists would recognize this and move away from their narrow perception of religion. At the same time I hate the reactionary attitude of many believers who consider all or most atheists ignorant and aggressive.

If I might speculate, I think that the internet as a whole is probably proportionate to real life. With a bias of course to those who have the technological infrastructure and the ability to use it, first world youth are oversampled, for example.
But given that so many Christian traffic exists, so many new age and eastern religious sites proliferate, and given what we know about some fundamentalist Muslims being radicalized via the internet. I don't think we could say it's mostly secular.
I think what is more likely is that the atheist population in culture is under-reported, because even though it's considered impolite to ask people about their religious affiliation, and even though diplomacy encourages secularism, it is considered the default position for someone to be a believer. (Erroneously, I have to add) I think a lot of people are familiar with the clip of Wolf Blitzer asking the oklahoma tornado survivor if she was grateful to god for sparing her, and she rather politely, if awkwardly said that she was an atheist.
>Oh, I'm in Oklahoma, I just assumed.
It's not that Christians and other believers are not used to having their faith questioned or challenged, I just think that they are not used to the level of challenge that an anonymous environment engenders. Meeting this "hidden" counter culture can cause them to overestimate the number and feel overwhelmed.
Much like some Homophobic individuals feel like "everyone is turning gay" now that people are more open about being gay, They were always gay. It's just you assumed otherwise unless you had reason to suspect.

>> No.3857520

I think he was specifically referring to that slice of nerdy somewhat old-fashioned Internet when he said Internet, and while that is selective, it's not an uncommon usage and it's a reasonable distinction to make - it's reasonable to talk about that specific slice of Internet activity as a discrete thing. and in that category, it really is at least plurality atheist/agnostic, if not overwhelmingly atheist/agnostic.

If you can't understand the specific Internet cultures we're talking about here, I'm not sure what to say. I definitely agree on social networking sites or the Internet more broadly the trend doesn't hold up but I think it's true enough amongst the specific subculture.

>>3857672
Nothing, but like I said respect for ancestors and cultural heritage is a big part of Asatru. People are also interested in the culture of the pagan societies, and they join kindreds (chapters) to meet like-minded people who share that mindset as much as they do for spiritual concerns. Kindreds aren't really like a Christian congregation, they're probably closer to religiously-minded cultural societies. Your 'religious observances' should be mainly shown in how you live your life.

Let's divide that text in two parts.

First, your description of the proletariat is symptomatic of the material and economic conditions that raised them, where they socialized. It's not their fault for being functionally illiterate, or being left culturally on the level of the multiplicity of consumerist choices. Anyone who have seen an advert knows, that the motor of our economy is propaganda, manipulation, simple lies. It's for the sake of the status quo the proletariat are being limited in growth of mind.

Second, your characterization of my own assessment of myself. It's quite the opposite, actually. I find my salvation in theirs.
