I was part of a creative writing group once (won't be again though!). Someone came in and said that a local nursery wanted some children's stories. I wrote out one, gave it to them and apparently the kids loved it.

So pursued it further and got it published and was sold to some nurseries. Did a couple of follow-ups too. Made a couple hundred from each book.

You get some good people in there but everyone wants to get on with everyone else so it is very self-congratulating. No one wants to upset anyone else so no one can call each other on their bullshit. I was reluctant to share anything I valued as I wouldn't get honest criticism.

It is like writing forums online, the worst criticism is changing one or two lines and fixing the grammar. Though /lit/ can be overly critical, anonymity allows for some criticism to exist.
