I'm also a believer in letting people choose what they want to read for the most part, but teaching them to disect it for themselves. Sadly English teachers are lazy and would rather repeat well known themes and theories.

I think the whole purpose of reading these modern books or whatever you want to call them is to get a feel for what the literary climate is at this time. I agree to some extent I liked Fahrenheit 451, but this is my unpopular opinion I HATED the old man and the sea. It wasn't that I missed the symbolism or that I can't appreciate symbolism that has that huge of a role in a book its just that the book itself was sooooo boring, Mr.Hemingway, you don't make a climax that carries on for 7 chapters, that kills a book.
