one of my lit classes in high school just did post-80s social justice shit and Siddartha. it was terrible (besides Hesse obviously). so sick of this "dead white males' shit and the fact that schools are starting to perpetuate it.

The Twilight series might not have tremendous depth, but it is a good example of top notch popular literature, more relevant than others because it's a contemporary work.

>I don't know /lit/ what do you think?
I agree because I like Hemingway and forced reading made me hate several authors I'd probably have liked.

I still blame having to write about Dubliners in high school as my reason for lacking interest in Joyce.

Let them read shitty books instead.

I'm also a believer in letting people choose what they want to read for the most part, but teaching them to disect it for themselves. Sadly English teachers are lazy and would rather repeat well known themes and theories.

>> No.4088241

>>4086662
I agree about hating books that were forced upon me. I couldn't stand Great Expectations and Joyce leaves a bad taste in my mouth as well.

>>4086492

I think the whole purpose of reading these modern books or whatever you want to call them is to get a feel for what the literary climate is at this time. Shitty or not, people should know what's happening. I'm not saying that it should actually be focused on Twilight or the FIOS, but they have become a central part to literature in this decade like it or not

I agree to some extent I liked Fahrenheit 451, but this is my unpopular opinion I HATED the old man and the sea. It wasn't that I missed the symbolism or that I can't appreciate symbolism that has that huge of a role in a book its just that the book itself was sooooo boring, Mr.Hemingway, you don't make a climax that carries on for 7 chapters, that kills a book.

I will preface this by saying that I am a big fan of John Green, but I say that if it can teach someone something, then more power too them. I mean, you can always just read it on your own, but then I guess that would be too much work for someone lik her.

Also, I agree, Fahrenheit 451 sucks dick

I always tell people Twilight is an excellent example of how to get published, you really can't read it and be confused about what demographic it's for.

But that's fiction writing, I don't know why it's in an English course
