OP, here. I thought this would start a shitstorm. Apparently all of /lit/ agrees?

>> No.478540

/lit/ is really slow right now, cause it's between 1:30 and 4:30 AM in the US

But I happen to agree with you so whatever

>> No.478542

I honestly don't know who the guy on the left is. Perhaps the knowledge of such would incite rage?

>> No.478544

>>478542
that is terry pratchett.

>> No.478549

YOU SON OF A BITCH.

Nah. Really, I couldn't care less. Good authors are good authors, and I think they're both extremely respectable in their own way.

>>478549
I like pratchett better, cuz he's more prolific, and his books cover a greater range of subject matter. I also find his humor to be more finely tuned, and not so goofy.

>> No.478553

>>478544
I thought it was Phillip K. Dick. I was incensed either way.

>> No.478557

what should i read from terry?

>> No.478558

>>478557
that depends, his work covers a lot of different things, What do you like usually? I haven't read ALL of his stuff yet, but i'm almost there.

Medieval works or sci fi.

>implying that douglas adams even holds a candle to philip K. Dick.

Lol.

hmmm... then color of magic, and the light fantastic. Any of the Rincewind books, or the Witches books, I should think. They kind of do this nifty thing where they come at science in this different ass backwards way, that's very medieval but also kind of makes sense.

For sci fi... eh... thief of time.

>>478565
oh, and Eric is a parody of Faust, so that might tickle you.

>> No.478574

Damn, I thought it was Penderecki. That would've been a wonderfully surreal poll.

Anyway, TP is more inconsistent and niche (not in appeal, but in self-imposed boundaries), but probably more entertaining.

In that some of his books are boring as hell - like how did he go from Feet of Clay to Jingo - total win to total mediocrity.

I lol'd

>> No.478585

ah, well. Go whichever way tickles you. When reading pratchett stuff, I would also make sure that if you're following one of his main sets of characters, you read them in the order published. This is especially important if you're reading a book that contains Vimes, or Death. The others you can kind of hop around, but you might spoil stuff for yourself. I think wikipedia has a list with the books in order of publication. .

DUnno who's the nigger on the left (Pratchett?), but fuck, sir, ANYONE is better than Douglas Adams. Adams might easily be the worst euthor of the second half of XX. He truly wrote Twilight-level books.

That is.

That is very much stirring up trouble on my tongue.

I want to rage, but you explicitly stated you are trying to make me mad, so I can't be mad or I'm letting you win.

As for which Pratchett books to read, Small Gods is FUCKWIN compared to his other ones. Made me laugh and think the most, so it must count for something.

More so than Night Watch? Personal favorite there, even if it is darker than the rest.

>> No.480557

Pratchett is definitely better. Adams was kind of a one hit wonder, each of his books after the first was worse than the one before it. He was living off the fame from that single novel (which was still a great novel and one of my favorites). Pratchett on the other hand, has only gotten better with time. He's written dozens of great novels. He's more prolific and his books are higher quality than Adams.

They're both still good.

>> No.480587

>>480504
Oh no doubt, Night Watch made me think, but about different things. ...I can't describe what they made me think about, because I really don't know how to put it in words, but it's got a lot about Religion, Faith, Freedom, Opinion, Death, Gods (as people), and a whole lot of Innocence.

Night Watch the same, I don't know how to relay what it made me think of, but it has a lot to do with Morality, Ethics, Revolution, Fate, a dash of Politics, Laws, the whole "Ethical Living" debate. Small Gods was more of a "Theistic Living", which should be one and the same, but the fact that the two are considered different in this day and age is something deeply disturbing.
