Why hasn't everybody started reading books?

Feels thread

>> No.5106736

It requires effort.

I can sit at the computer and be bombarded by music, games, video, instantly. Or I can sit down and read a book.

Most people tend to be pretty instant gratification.

It does require effort and I'm still not perfect. I just work a bunch and bring a book everywhere for my free time which isn't all that much. Its also more socially acceptable than my 3ds. Some girls are fascinated with the book reader.

i read portions, overviews, summaries, scripts, various interpretations of books... but it is hard to sit and read a book in its entirety, i lose interest

also, i am more into learning about things, opposed to experiencing them, i spend more time learning about all kinds of subjects without an agenda, than structured reading of books

Good god, this.

Also OP, what kind of a retarded and juvenile question is this, of course people are stupid, bread and circuses et cetera. It's like asking "why isn't everyone superior?", it's human nature.

Just to be clear, an ignorant life is a wasted life.

On the other hand, kids at school are crappy readers.
Give Musil, Euripides or Proust to high schoolers, and they'll be bored.

I think school should focus strongly on discussing what is good literature & what is bad literature with examples from poetry and short stories, instead of forcing people to swallow thick classics then "analyzing" them (like they were made for this purpose).

This is so fucking stupid. When did we start to try to cheat to find time to read? We used to have reading as the main event of the day and try to manage to do the rest of the stuff quickly on the side.
Reading a good book requires you to have your mind in the world for hours straight with complete concentration. Every bit of you needs to be engulfed by the book. Only then can you see what wasn't written and why.
If you just read a bit on the toilet and a little before you go to sleep and a few pages on your lunch break you might as well put the book away to wait till someone can give it the proper respect it deserves.

Yeah I tend to do a similar thing.
I just like to learn things so I do a lot of research on all kinds of unrelated random subjects. But some things (such as philosophy or politics) you cant just read some articles and a wiki to aquire sufficient knowledge (unlike, for example, distillation or farming). So Ive learned to read books to fill in those spaces. Sadly, its hard for me to pick them up and afterwords to stay concentrated for long periods of time, so I have to fix these problems.
