Holy shit, you're the first person I've ever seen besides me talk about that book. I've loved that book since I first read it in jr. high. I had a vintage copy that belonged to my grandmother, and then my sister, who was visiting with her dog, "borrowed" it from me (meaning just took it) and her dog chewed it up. It took me quite a while to find another copy that was printed the same year as the one I had before.

In the UK, for grad jobs and internships, you have to put your interests on them (srs). I put reading and weightlifting. I signed up to some scheme at my uni where older people "mentor" you by giving CV advice and answering questions. My mentor told me I should put my favourite authors on my CV. I put Nabokov and someone else that /lit/ doesn't talk about. I felt like such a fraud for doing that since I don't know shit about analysing texts to decipher greek legends or the hidden homosexuality of the author or whatever.

I took the authors off soon after

At heart, based means basically being true to oneself, e.g. being secure in the face of outward adversity, hence having a strong "base". Used mainly to refer to popular personas, whether they be youtube personalities, tv hosts, or just popular trip-users, especially when they are percieved to "not give a fuck" or to otherwise hold themselves above drama in the scene they represent.

Basically, its just the hip new word for "very cool person"

I went over my head and started Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, got stuck but didn't want to read anything else before I finished that and ended up not reading for weeks, but now it's finally starting to make sense and I'm able to go through it at a decent pace.

I bought 5 Don Dellilo books on impulse cus they were super cheap and he kept coming up in my recs and he sounded cool. I read White Noise, Cosmopolis, and Point Omega before I realized I really didnt like his style or his work.

I once tried to get one of my Pokemon fanfics published. Sent out letters to agents and everything. This was back when I was like 13 or 14.

The odd thing is that I swear I remember getting an interested response. The letter's been lost to time, but I genuinely recall someone being interested in it. I don't think they realized it was fanfiction.

I fell in love with a beautiful and excellent girl who was a decent if not good writer. We seperated for two reasons: first, I was too unhappy/weird/selfloathing/masochistic; second, because while she was telling me to be happier, one of the methods she suggested was to watch The Big Bang Theory. I didn't get pissy, no, I just felt as though the one comparatively enchanted and gorgeous object that I had with me in a wasteland suddenly turned to ash.

This is something that's still ongoing for me, but I always read books that people recommend for me, even though I very rarely enjoy the same books that my friends/family do.

I'll still never forgive the guy who insisted that I read "Shantaram".
