I would call Neil Gaiman's works as a whole my personal "it" as far as things recommended by my writer friends go. I've tried on several occasions to get into his works, but even when I make it through a whole book it just feels like I've...eaten a tall stack of toast or something -- meaning, I finished it, sure, but it wasn't very fulfilling and I'm not sure why I bothered to do it. I just recently realized that the Keys to the Kingdom series (friends goaded me into buying and reading the first book some years ago and I had the exact same "meh" feeling about it) is his work too, and I didn't really notice before (derp derp I forget to look at author names often) so it's not prejudice on my part. Maybe the problem is that his ideas were original fifteen years ago and are not anymore, so it's tiring to see them presented a ssuch and used as the selling point of a book? Or maybe I'm just some kind of heathen that ought to be kicked in the face for not liking omgz neal gaiman omgz.

Also fuck you Gurren Lagann is amazing. Then again, I totally consider Code Geass an "it" so you just shouldn't listen to my opines on anime in general.

The thing about Gurren Lagann is that it is a smooth, simple, modern go at everything that made giant robots appealing to children in the 70's and 80's. It was made by people with a great amount of love for the topic, and most people who grew up with that kind of thing are going to love it. Without prior experience with the content it becomes a rather par children's show.

Invincible? Really? I rather like Invincible. For a capes book it has a very solid set of plot lines and the style and characters are charming. I highly doubt anyone who recommends it is doing so because it is 'the greatest thing ever'.

Someone else was right, if you want to know why you keep getting recommended Gaiman you have to read Sandman. By far his greatest work. Neverwhere is my favorite though, its just so damn fun. I didn't like American Gods.

Also, /co/s isn't Invincible. It likes Invincible sure but its not what it recommends to everyone. Watchmen is considered by everyone a classic, obviously not what the OP is talking about. /co/s version of this is definitely All-Star Superman.

Sandman's definetely what got me into Gaiman. I just finished American Gods and I liked it but felt that it could have been better. Am about to read Smoke and Mirrors and probably Stardust or Neverwhere after that.
