Stoicism is Cynicism for pussies.

>From the day Zeno became Crates’s pupil, he showed a strong bent for philosophy, though with too much native modesty to assimilate Cynic shamelessness. Hence Crates, desirous of curing this defect in him, gave him a potful of lentil-soup to carry through the Ceramicus; and when he saw that Zeno was ashamed and tried to keep it out of sight, with a blow of his staff, Crates broke the pot. As Zeno began to run off in embarrassment with the lentil-soup flowing down his legs, Crates chided “Why run away, my little Phoenician?”, “nothing terrible has befallen you.”

Because we don't want what we think we want, and just by trying to stifle what you think you want wont make you happy because what you think you want isn't really what you want.

>Hence Pepe, desirous of curing this defect in Anon, gave him a pocketful of spaghetti to carry through the GameStop, and when he saw that Anon was ashamed and tried to hide it and keep it out of sight, with a slash of his knife, Pepe sliced open the pocket. As Anon began to run off in embarrassment with the spagehtti flowing down his legs, Pepe chided, "Why run away, my little autist? Nothing terrible has befallen you."

Stoicism doesn't want to get rid of all emotions. Just the negative ones.

I don't want to start another thread on this so I'll just ask in a greek-related thread.

I have to read The Histories of Herodotus for a seminar I'm sitting in on next week. To be specific, the 8th and 9th books. Does /lit/ have any advice on tackling this? Are there any decent secondary sources that I can get a basic gist of the book from? I want a general feel for the book outside of what I'm reading since I'll be in a seminar with people that have already read the whole thing.

Nah, I can read two chapters. The other people in the seminar will have read the entire Histories and I will obviously have only read two chapters. I just want something I can read to get an idea of what's in the other seven books, so I'm up to scratch with the people that have read the entire book.

Because one Stoic is not like another, a bit like claiming to be a Democrat, or a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I take what I like from them, but I wont adopt their label.

But I have always been an Epicurean. Many years before I ever even heard of the man.

Because it's an unfinished philosophy.

Aristotle talks about the importance of luck, the importance of having certain things that you need for virtuous living. Without certain things it's pretty hard to be happy.

You might get HIV and not have access to medicine, and you are also starving to death and bandits bet you daily. Sure you can pretend like you'll just go into zen mode, but really that would just suck a lot.

It doesnt seek to rid one of emotions, that would be impossible unless youre a psychopath. But to recognize them and move past them.
