Lit,

What's the best novel DeLillo has to offer?

I'd say it's a tie between Libra and Underworld. White Noise was too pomo cliche for me.

Paid delillo shill get lost. /lit/ archive is strewn with your advertisements.

LIterary appreciation is nothing more than advertisement

Fuck off, are we not allowed to talk about authors in a positive light now? He's one of the most well known contemporary American authors, of course he's talked about often here.

Shills shilling hard. Go to the /lit/ archive and look at how much Delillo is mentioned.

Obvious paid shillery.

Really, you're giving them too much credit calling them shills. They only talk about DeLillo because Harold Bloom said he's one of the best living American authors

>> No.5851964

>>5851957
Who need's Harold Bloom to say so? You're giving Bloom too much credit if you think he's responsible for DeLillo's popularity both here and elsewhere.

>> No.5851971

>>5851964
That's true, but internet shills aren't responsible for it either

please go back to /pol/ with your shit lingo.

OP here -- I like it how not a single mention of his novels has sprung up. Okay. Just curious.

I thought the toxicity of lit might subside, but I was wrong. At least I didn't mention DFW.

>"Is it raining," I said, "or isn't it?"
>"I wouldn't want to have to say."
>"What if someone held a gun to your head?"
>"Who, you?"
>"Someone. A man in a trenchcoat and smoky glasses. He holds a gun to your head and says, 'is it raining or isn't it? All you have to do is tell the truth and I'll put away my gun and take the next flight out of here.'"
>"What truth does he want? Does he want the truth of someone traveling at almost the speed of light in another galaxy? Does he want the truth of someone in orbit around a neutron star? Maybe if these people could see us through a telescope we might look like we were two feet two inches tall and it might be raining yesterday instead of today."
>"He's holding a gun to your head. He wants your truth."
>"What good is my truth? My truth means nothing. What if this guy with the gun comes from a planet with a whole different solar system? What we call rain he calls soap. What we call apples he calls rain. So what am I supposed to tell him?"
>"His name is Frank J. Smalley and he comes from St. Louis"
>"He wants to now if it's raining now, at this very minute?"
>"Here and now. That's right"
>"Is there such a thing as now? 'Now' comes and goes as soon as you say it. How can I say it's raining now if your so-called 'now' becomes 'then' as soon as I say it?"
>"You said there was no past, present or future."
>"Only in verbs. That's the only place we find it."
>"Rain is a noun. Is there rain here, in this precise locality, at whatever time within the next two minutes that you choose to respond to the question?"
>"If you want to talk about this precise locality while you're in a vehicle that's obviously moving, then I think that's the trouble with this discussion."
>"Just give me an answer, okay, Heinrich?"
>"The best I could do is make a guess."
>"Either it's raining or it isn't," I said.
>"Exactly. That's my whole point. You'd be guessing. Six of one, half dozen of the other."
"But you see it's raining."
>"You see the sun moving across the sky. But is the sun moving across the sky or is the earth turning?"

Underworld is his best I'd say. Libra is second and End Zone is probably third. Most of his stuff is at least good though

>> No.5852220

I didn't like White Noise much myself, but I'm just about to start Underworld, pretty excited, it sounds a lot more realist and character driven which is good.

I love Heinrich. White Noise is the best. Mao II is pretty great too. I'm reading Libra next I think

Mao II is underrated

I love the scene when the confrence is bombed, and Bill and his editor just brush it off and go to a café nearby.

>> No.5852464

>>5852424
Yeah the book has a lot of his best imagery, like the opening mass wedding and the shit show after the death of the Ayatollah.

>> No.5852571

>>5852123
Jeeze, is this really what he's like? I've had some interest in reading his stuff before but this is like a 10th grader trying to write "deep" dialogue.

>> No.5852580

>>5852571
This is what White Noise is like.
It's on purpose. And it's why I don't like that book.

>> No.5852588

>>5852571
iirc one of the members of that dialogue is supposed to be annoyingly pretentious and like 14

i actually think those conversations are semi accurate depictions of a confused dad trying to talk to his kid who is that type of person

>> No.5852610

>>5852580
>>5852588
Ah okay, some interest regained. That kid sounds like a little shit though, so if I read him soon I'll probably go with something other than White Noise.

>> No.5852613

I love Underworld. Definitely his best.
I really liked parts of Falling Man, but it could have been better.
I kind of agree with you on White Noise, but again it had some great stuff in it.
I didnt enjoy Cosmopolis too much.
I Have Americana but havent gotten around to reading it yet.
Ill have to check out Libra, after Underworld I really want to check out everything hes written.

>> No.5852634

I'm about 80 pages into white noise at the moment but for me its not really captivating. Maybe I haven't read enough yet, but is there actually a story or does it just narrate the life and thoughts of the hitler studies professor?

that dialogue is hilarious in the context of the novel, it's his autistic pretentious kid who plays chess with prison inmates all day

>> No.5852791

>>5852634
a story materializes later

the beginning is just domestic. it's actually my fav part tho

>> No.5852793

I haven't read Underworld yet.
But I'd say either Players or Mao II.
Something in Players really got to me, and Mao II seems like borderline prophetic when you read it now.

I'm reading cosmopolis right now, its pretty shitty.

Heinrich is just the main characters son and being "that guy" is his purpose. The entire novel isn't like that.

>> No.5852816

I loved White Noise, Cosmopolis was okay, Underworld is on my to-read list.
Either way he's a fun read.

>> No.5852841

>>5852794
Cosmopolis is trash, yeah. I'm not big on DeLillo in his post-The Body Artist career.

thats good to hear

yeah i can see how it is nice to read, due to the lack of things actually happening.
Its easier to appreciate how well written it is
