Stay away. Everything is literally an edited google translation of the original works and the ones translated aren't good to begin with.

There are plenty of good ones but almost all translations are bad.
They are not books so don't expect them to be at all similar ("visual novel" is a misnomer and not even what the creators of the games call them).

Steins;Gate (A+ story, might need to be into anime to really like it though).

Those should get you started OP. I'd recommend reading G-Senjou first though, it's the most accessible for normalfags and pretty good.

Steins;Gate is great, mostly because of the unique choice system(you answer texts on your phone as the scenes play out) and the amazing art. It has a few badly written scenes in my opinion, but the overarching plot makes up for it.

Getting back to the topic, /a/ or /jp/ would be a better place to ask, but I can give some recommendations. Anything by the studio Visual Arts Key is incredibly well-written and well-acted and emotionally involving. Their best stuff is Little Busters and Rewrite.

I've played katawa shoujo and Saya no Uta.
Go play Saya no uta, it's kind of good, and it's gore perversion should get her disgusted forever.
