You know, as much as /lit/ doesn't like this book and points out its flaws quite a bit, I still enjoy it for what it is, a simple story of good and evil with enjoyable characters and a quirky, well-designed world.

It was a part of my childhood, and a part of what got me into literature. It's like trying to hate Sesame Street or the Muppets, you just can't.

Yes, it's not perfect, but it's fun, and shouldn't that be what reading is about?

Agreed. By the time Deathly Hallows came out it was pretty much like Star Wars episode 3 to me, relatively decent but the first ones will always have a place in my childhood.

>> No.597310

Deathly Hallow was a bit of a slog through the chapters they were camping around. But I did enjoy it and read it the very night it came out.

Half-Blood Prince, on the other hand, I thought was terrible. It read like fan-fic.

What are you talking about? Rowling barely does any world building at all. Eragon has a more expansive world than Harry Potter, and a more coherent magic system.

I dunno. That plot device of Draco
malfoy being the true owner of the Elder Wand , a bit that hinges on a tiny sliver of text in volume 6, was pretty flimsy.

I enjoyed them. Book 5 was my personal favourite, but I'll always remember 1-3 as the books of my childhood. Even as a kid, I was a pretentious douchebag and refused to read anything too popular. Must admit, I was wrong on this one.

I actually thought book 6 was the best, I liked all the backstory that fleshed Voldemort's character out and I felt that the book had a sort of creepy air to it. I was hoping 7 would expand further on Voldemort but it seems it was just dropped and he remained the generic evil wizard.

>> No.598047

I liked all the books, but I would never re-read 1st, 2nd and possibly the 3rd one again. 6th book was ok, while it was plot-lite, it felt like a nice holiday from all the stuff that used to happen in previous books.
I was quite upset when I finished reading the last book, partially because of the shitty fucking epilogue, and partially because the series was over (and a huge part of my childhood with it)

know what i liked about deathly hollows? the author created an over-powered magic system and actually let their characters push it to the limit.

see, in the original starwars, you wondered why people didn't cut through doors with light sabers or turn off their lightsabers for a split second before they were blocked and then turned them on again to create an unblockable lightsaber slash. the power of the lightsaber was not taken to it's limit because it would be to OP.

in deathly hollows, you never asked "well, why didn't they just do X? it's totally possible given their magic system!!" the harry gang just fucking apparated everywhere whenever they wanted to avoid being caught. it's what you'd expect someone to do if they were internationally hunted people that could teleport anywhere in the world. other authors would be like, "that's too troublesome, i'll just say voldemort placed a some kind of anti-apparation charm on england" or some shit like that.

Speaking of which, why do students at Hogwarts not study literature?

The closest thing they have to a math class is a numerology class (which is stupidly made an elective) and they just about skim over history. They also don't study SCIENCE at all. Not even soft sciences like psychology.
Also, why doesn't Hogwarts have a P.E. requirement or any art electives?

Though you know what I'd really hate if I were going to Hogwarts? The complete and utter lack of any kind of fucking drama program. Fuck.

they study potions + look into alchemy a bit (which I suppose is like wizard chemistry)
and botony (which is a small branch of biology)
and astronomy (so there you go)

the first years all get quidditch lessons (I guess that counts as P.E. but not really - technically hogwarts should be a prime example of child obesity considering all they eat is banquet sized feasts every day, magic candy and drink beer made out of butter)

but yeah, I'm sure there'd be a policies meeting on hogwarts to teach more relevant stuff if the government had any jurisdiction over them.

I had a massive online argument - pretty much like trolling and raging at the same time, in that seemingly paradoxically enjoyable way - with some fuckknuckle about wizards versus everyone else, and the most retarded argument from him was that a wizard aiming a wand and saying the death curse was faster than a soldier aiming a gun and pulling the trigger.

she's fleshed out hogwarts pretty well over the years. It's a pretty interesting place the way she writes it.

So I'd disagree with you there.
what I will critique Rowling on, is that her characters are all flat and boring, and the plot and narrative seems to be advanced by the mood the character's are in.
