Does manga count as literature?

Post your favourite manga.

>> No.6092394

Yes.

I haven't read any though. They seem to be for a younger demographic. Are there any for people 20+?

Check out Kengo Hanazawa's stuff, especially "Boys on the Run"

(Don't judge it based on its wikipedia descriptions. for some insane reason everyone classifies BotR as "boxing manga", but boxing comprises maybe 5% of it, it's like calling The Brothers Karamozov a novel about monasteries)

Nijigahara Holigraph. Better than most literature.

>> No.6092425

Berserk's Golden Age arc is amazing, pretty much some of my favorite fiction, ever. It gets progressively worse afterwards though, but I'll always enjoy that part.

There's a VERY small subset of (usually Seinen) Manga which has some artistic or philosophical merit.

Favorite English published manga is "A Brides Story" The over all story is nice and the subject matter is presented in a clear and endearing manner. Plus the art is great.

It does but the really good ones that you could classify as high art are really hard to find even in Japan. "A cruel God Reigns" is one of the best with a stepfather raping his son in law. and the repercusions of forcing someone into an abusive relationship. One of the first manga to reach western audiences is BArefoot Gen, with the telling of a child from Hiroshima surviving the nuclear blast.
Naoki Urasawa is also one of those literary geniuses that's made really good manga like "Monster", "20th century boys"etc the problem is that he builds this intricate story that actually makes sense then fucks the ending. It's actually frustrating to see how good he is at developing the story only to see it crash at the ending.

But I think Homonculus might suit /lit/'s taste more.

When you get past the filth you can find some amazing works. Its a shame most people don't try and look for it.

>> No.6093686

I recommend Yoshihiro Tatsumi's collected works like Abandon the Old in Tokyo. He was one of the pioneers of adult manga and his storied are full of disgust and hatred towards the world. As a result they can come off as try-hard and ridiculous, but that's part of the charm.
