I've read very little of him but like a lot of the beat generation he thought his shit was made of gold. This arrogance out-shined his writing and his message, and it's almost impossible to detach yourself from his self importance once you realise how fucking prominent it is.

At the time of his fame I'm sure most people thought he was edgy and hip. Like Burroughs and Kerouac he romanticised misanthropy and a lifestyle set on the fringe of American society. But unlike the timeless writers of the 20th, the novelty of their message wore thin pretty quickly. He and all the other Beat writers tried way too hard to prove how cool they were, and it becomes unfortunately obvious when you read them with a critical eye.

If you want non-pretentious booze writing check out Raymond Carver. The dude was perpetually drenched in bourbon and I'm pretty sure he died of an alcoholism related illness. What separates him from Buttowski is that he doesn't go around screaming about how cool his debauchery is. He writes it how it is, and in doing so preserves his voice in American literary history with a fair bit more integrity.

tl;dr Buttowski tried way to hard. Read Carver instead. The beat generation is full of spastics

And since Buttowski wrote almost strictly about his smelly hangovers and pissed stained undies, I equate him to the beat generation. hey friend. I think you have some gr8 posts up in this board, and I agree that Bukowski was certainly a beat.
What I think is wonderful about the guy is that he fell into writing, from his deadbeat jobs and ruined relationships. And he wrote about with enough finesse that he became successful as an author. There will always be those that shit on him because his subject material is not transcendant stuff, but he is true to his nature, i.e. he was a low-life working shit jobs until around 40 when he started writing novels.
he writes fantasy low-life stuff, the complete absence of a cause or calling was his shtick.

Mind you an authors background should remain irrelevant to his/her work and message. I don't care if they grew up rich or poor or in between. They can write about that shit, that's fine. Just as long as they do well. You see it with Sylvia Plate. Her reputation precedes her and her poetry gets lost in the Frey. If instead we just focused on her outputs, and not on her history, we might find something deeper in her works.

Same with Heidegger. Cunts don't want to read the dude because he was a supposed Nazi. But his Nazism has nothing to do with his work, with what he contributed to society.

When a good book is produced it extends out beyond the author. If a book is simply made good because it was written within a specific context, then it's no good to me.

Bukowski may have been dirt poor and found his solace in writing, and I respect and admire that, but at the end of the day his writing is still shit.

Bukowski accompanied me through some crazy times in my life. I discovered him at 19 (see >>6108178 ) in the middle of a two year long drug binge. His gritty poetry just fit well then.

The way I see it, Bukowski's work is to poetry what grunge rock is to music. He champions the low life and says a big ''fuck you'' to anything that could be considered conformist or mainstream.

I don't think he takes poetry writing OR himself very seriously; you can tell that he wrote certain especially simple/pointless/revolting works just to sit back and be amused at how readers and publishers actually payed money for it, and to laugh at people who reverently quoted poems that he dug out of the bottom of his wastebasket and sent in as a gag. If you look a bit closer, Bukowski is the opposite of arrogant.

Between the drunken scribblings, he's hidden a few brilliant and insightful things, the fun part is trying to find them.

It could be the same person over and over. They regurgitate the same shit so often that the comics literally mimic their arguments to me. I'm simply having fun.

>Either way, you're just shitposting.
Fine if you feel that way. I'm just somebody who is willing to have a discussion (or argument) on Bukowski's writing. If you don't like me, don't read me. I make it easier by wearing a trip.

It's a free webcomic maker, calm down.

Ok, I'll just move on then, I can guess the rest of your post.

If your definition of fun is posting those shite web comics in response to people who like an artist that you don't, you're pretty deranged.

> I'm just somebody who is willing to have a discussion (or argument) on Bukowski's writing.

And if you did that like a normal person, I wouldn't have called you a pathetic faggot. You entered this thread with le epic meme comics and that's it. If you weren't so vain, you would articulate an actual comment, copy that into a text document, save it, and repost it for discussion. Instead you screencap yourself and make shitty posts.

> If you don't like me, don't read me.

Tripfags want attention, and get a steady trickle of it for mediocre gimmickposting. They feel embarrassed for not getting more despite all the effort they put into being a !~PERSONALITY~! so they rationalize more and more over time that they will get more attention the more elaborate and effort their gimmick persona is.

Then literally no one remembers them a day after they stop.

I find it more funny than anything.

I mean, I agree with him, Bukowski is shit, and it was ridiculous at first how butthurt you all got about it, but it's also kind of ridiculous to keep it up this long. Then again I'm still posting on this fucking board as well so I guess I was the faggot all along.

I'm here. I don't make it a secret that I'm willing to discuss Bukowski. I'm not stopping anyone from coming up to me with a strong counterpoint to me. I also don't pretend to be a goodie two shoes. I love seeing people lose their shit, like you, over trivial shit like a tripfag posting a free webcomic.

No problem.
I've got to get off. Let me just say, for those of you who literally get mad, flip out, or whatever about me or any other tripfag or person on the internet: Chill out. It's some guy over the internet. Honestly for the people who attempt to get me into some sort of "gotcha" or attempt to tarnish my trip, it's a trip. I don't care about it really at all. I know I'm ruining some of my own fun, but it's become obvious to me to have to say this. I use to think the "fucked your mom" and "your a girl" guys and I were having fun and you aren't actually letting a tripfag get you smash the keyboard mad. I still hope for most of you that's true.

If you're legit getting angry at me, or any other trip, for fucks sakes filter the trip or learn to chill the fuck out and relax. You're on fucking 4chan.

Are you really willing to discuss though? How many entries to civil discussion were there before you came here?

So, in your infinite desire to discuss the faults of Bukowski's writing you went and made structured arguments in response to those comments, right?

Oh, wait.

No. That's right. You just posted antagonistic bait of no value. Nice 1. Sure rekt us all.

Good post. I've responded to your shit in the past, and while I've never gotten actually mad, I've spewed some vitriolic shit at you. Just so you know. I would never wish you harm and its all in good fun. And keeping all those things in mind, I do still think you're a fucking goon, especially in how you dedicate time toward making those little "here's me on 4chan" images. And keeping THAT in mind, regardless, I hope you have a good day/night (wherever you are) and I wish you all the best in your real life. Seriously. But on here, man, fuck your shit, nigga.
