Truman Capote was quoted as saying "That's not writing; that's typing" in reference to Kerouac's On the Road? Is he right? Also, check out the link below for a clip from one of my favorite tv shows of all time where they (very) briefly discuss the book, using the Capote quote as well. Are the students right or the teacher?

That was my initial reaction in high school, yeah. Good wordsmithing? Yes, in places. Writing? Not really. Hipster bullshit half a century old is still hipster bullshit.

....what link?

Can you elaborate on what you mean precisely when you say 'hipster bullshit?'

And yeah I forgot the link in OP, it's in the first reply.

This seems a lot like musicians trying to argue about improvising vs. composing. Both ways work, but saying one is better is wrong. Or, at least, subjective.

Also, why was that your initial reaction? For the reasons given by the students in the clip?

And when you specify 'initial' reaction, it may imply that wasn't your only or lasting impression, so can you elaborate on that as well?

No. It'd take too long. TL;DR: it fits into the category of 'people who dig this shit went looking for it to fill needs they had to begin with.' It's pure Gonzo journalism, but it ain't literature.

But Phil, that would imply that Thompson didn't write literature.

Of course he did. But that also doesn't fit his definition of Gonzo journalism -- which was, IIRC, serving as a sort of lens for the viewer that bypassed the medulla.
