It depends on the music. Music with singing/vocals in general distracts me a lot more than instrumental music does. There is a lot of distracting instrumental music as well, which brings me back to the first statement.

I usually steer away from music that ends up in a wall of climax, because it ends up being a too distractive for me. I also prefer having the music turned down a bit, so it doesn't occupy my mind too much. It's just.. there, in a way.

ok listening to music and reading at the same time is a skill, most people can't do it because they get way to distracted, personally i love my music while i read, for those who don't like lyrics, check out sigur rose, they do mostly instrumental and its pretty awesome for a mellow read

I usually just tune in BBC3 Radio and leave that in the background when reading. Classical is non-distracting, for the most part.
