the level of detail required for makeup, wardrobe, special effects, etc is astronomical. framing and lighting every shot for the right atmosphere would be damn near impossible as well. lots of freak weather, alien landscapes and night scenes.

i know the link is fake, but who has even expressed interest in tackling the project? it would be a logistical nightmare. lynch is plausible. i'd call in cronenberg or his team for the violent special effects.

Couldn't be harder than there will be blood. I couldn't imagine the Judge's speeches, like the one on war, coming off well in any film.

All the ones with the big Apache massacres and that scene with the gang being chased up the mountain by the Apaches would be pretty difficult tho. But hey, they did lotr, so anything's possible

I think you'll find that the Coen brothers did not in fact direct the Lord of the Rings films. All three were directed by Peter Jacksman.

>> No.6906169

>>6904297
Well they're probably the best choice, they did well with no country, but that was such an easier novel to film. Plus I think the coens will tone down the violence to get maximum distribution and attendance rates, so they won't go near NC17 material which is really what blood meridian deserves for a faithful adaptation. Also people on lit are gonna hate on the book once the film is released now because it will be mainstream, which will be funny to me to see reactionary hypocrisy in action.

So overall, meh

>Coen brothers are a bad choice in my opinion.

Most def. Their directorial "style" is going to fight for presence with Blood Meridian, and it is going to loose, but they are not going to not make it cause of that. It will just be a nasty flop and embarrassment to all.

What they were born to direct however is A Confederacy of Dunces.

Literally dropped the ball: The Director
Don't try and pretend To the Wonder, The New World or that shitty indulgent self parody Knight of Cups are good films, perhaps pre 21st Century the only thing Malick did 21st Century that was good was Tree of Life but compare those to the consistent quality of the Coens No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man, Inside Llewyn Davis, True Grit so yeah they're better.

no country doesn't have nearly the scale that blood meridian has. its a mccarthy book, sure, but that's like saying someone who directed a good adaptation of the death of ivan illych is the best candidate to make an adaptation of anna karenina. with no country for old men you're talking about a film where the most number of characters in a given scene was 5 or 6. some blood meridian scenes have hundreds of people, in a dynamic action. coen brothers have only managed as close in o brother where art thou, where those characters were sitting or standing in a movie theatre, not on horseback at war. as mentioned before, the shooting locations, special effects, makeup, wardrobe, and cinematography are all beyond the usual coen brothers' repertoire. no country for old men had very little in the way of any of these features. that doesn't make it a bad film, i thought they did a great job, its just a very different scale.

i like them fwiw, they are excellent with managing tension/pacing, integrating a soundtrack, spotlighting an acting performance, or introducing characters, but blood meridian demands much more. a different kind of director as well, where mood, tone, atmosphere, and appearance are emphasized. coen brothers excel at storytelling, not aesthetics.

>>6906164
simple misunderstanding. he meant "they" as a generalization, not coen brothers.

Oh I've seen it and that sort of b-game McCarthy works well for the Coen bros because it possesses all of MCarthy's style and story but barely any of his genius. The Coen brothers are no where near equipped, visually or dialogically, to film a novel like Blood Meridian. They just can't do it; they are too flip, to corny, too reliant on 'their' trademark cinematographic ethos for it ever to work.

Confederacy of Dunces on the other hand is the literary work of genius basically made for them to adapt. Jesus 1960s/70s New Orleans, Ignatius and the way he gives himself over to monologue, the detective voice-over. I've no doubt they could do something amazing with that work, no matter who they got to star.
